After embracing her father, with many loving words of courage, she said sucideuly: Father, could you spare me from your Ride for a fow days.'

this time inn, and to her delight, but no slight trepidation (for, after all, a woman's heart beat beneath her buff jerkin), sho naw the postman sleeping soundly on a bench, with his head propped on the mailbag as a pillow. Here was the difficulty. How to get that bag without rousing its guardian! Sending the garrulous hostess to the well to draw a fresh draught of water, with a promise to pay for it as wine, Grisol cropt like a mouse to the man's side, and finger- ed the fateful bag. But instantly the man roused, and with all her heart in her mouth sho darted back to her seat. Fortunately, höslept again, but she decided to bide hor time, and not to put the chance of hor father's life to too great a hazard. She re- solved upon another plan.
The man's pistols lay upon a table, stuck in their holsters, and she know too well they were loaded. With stealthy footsteps she turned to the table, and,
pulling out the weapons, with drawo breath and haggard eyes, she withdrew their charges and thrust them back again into their holsters. None.too soon, as that very moment the woman returned with her pitcher, and Grisel, having moistened her parched throat, paid the bill, and got to hor horse again.
She rode beyond the town, and then ro-

the postman would pass on his way to the north. Presently he came jolting along, the mailbags on either side of his saddle. and the pistols stuck in front. Grisel greeted him civilly, though feeling ready to die with fear, and rode alongside, gossiping with a light tongue, but a very heavy heart. The man was a tall, strong fellow, and she but a feeble woman. It seemed an age before she could nerve her- self to the great attempt. But suddenly, halfway between Belford nad Berwick, she pulled her horse across the road, barring the man's way, and said in tow but stead- fast voice:
Friend, I have a nood for those mailbags. Therefore hand them over, and that quietly, or your death be on your own head,”-
With that she thrust a pistol at the man's face, and stared at him straightly with eyes that did not quake,
The man took it for a joke at first, and laughed at her impudence. Suddenly it was borno in upon him that here was no jest, but grim earnest. He whipped out. his pistols, firing them ons after another, but they flashed in the lock, for she had made them harmloss. Ho sprang from his horse in speechless rage, and rushed for ward to seize her. Then Grisel, quick as for thought, bent down, and seized the post- man's horse by the bridle-rain. Using her apura, she galloped down the road with both horses, lookg back to see the post- man waving his fist at her in speechless nge, but not halting till she was beyond-
