At last, at one of Mr Sweeney's innocont questions, the lady vindictively orted: "Mr Lawyer, you needn't think you can catch me; no, sir you can't catch me.' With his most pleasing amile, Mr Sweeney responded: Madam, I haven't the slight- est desire to catch you, and your husband looke to me as if he was sorry he had succeeded.'

The Singap Pin Prem gives the Howing particular" : -
On June 12 at 6.15 p.m., when the Surpatan was between the Une Fathom Bank and Pulau Berhala, the Chief Officer, Mr Recken, who was on watch on the bridge, saw a sudden coinmotion artongst the pas kongura and heard shouts of 'amok 'amok! and the screams of the female passengers. He hastily left the bridge and on gaining the derk met Captain Winne carrying a Inaded rifle. The Captain said that a Ja Fanese passenger bad suddenly run amok, and, with an axe in one hand and a large knife in the other, had attacked his follow- pasirengers and badly wounded four, und The deck was now in hiding somewhore. war bespattered with blood, and the four victims of the amok kay groaning in various places with frightful wounds The Kling trader named first man attacked,
B. Samuel, was lying near the poop with a terrible gash on the left side of his throat, and the three other victims, who wore Chinese coolies, were crouching in corners bleeding from deep wounds in their arms and legs. Before anything could be done for them, however, the madman had to le secured, and Mr Reoke traced him to the saloon by the blood drops along the deck. Here he was found, and on seeing the officer he rushed at him, and Mr Rocken, being unarmed, ran to his cabin for his re- volvers. Hastily seizing one he fired a shot at the Javanese, and the madman ran out of the saloon towards the engine-room, where he was met by Captain Winne. He dashed madly at the Captain with the axe up for a blow, but Capt. Winne coolly stood his ground and when the madman was within a few yards of him brought him In the deck with a shot through the body. Others of the crew then ru hed up and helped to diarm the amok who was Recare- ly hand-cuffed to a ringbolt in the deck. The ship's officers then turned their at tention to quelling the panic amongst the passengers who wore rushing about the deck screaming, while several attempted to jump overboard in their frigh'. After the panic had been somewhat allayed the victims of the inadman were attended to by Dr Schindler, who fortunately happened to be passenger by the Sumatra. Nothing could be done for the unfortunate Indian, however, and he succumbed to his in- juries at 7.20 p.m. The wounds of the Chinese coolies were stitched up and after being bandaged they were ordered to go and lie down in the saloon. The doctor tried to approach the Javanese to see what could be done for him, but he struggled shortly after became furiously, and
next expired. The and unconscious morning early Deli was reached and the Sumatra entered the Port flying the Police flag. The Dutch Police came aboard and removed the bodies of the madman and the Indian to the mortuary, and the three injur ed coolies to the Hospital, where they are doing woll.
