As Canada has suc- cessfully escaped assimilation during her | lean years, when the amazing prosperity of her neighbour was balanced against her own poverty and the indifferent attitude of the Mother Country, there is ground for confidence in the breasts of loyal Canadiana now that she herself is on the crest of the wave and now that Great Britain is herself Awakening to the true Imperialism."

DOES A WOMAN LACK

HUMOUR?

A writer in the Daily Chronicle, who evidently deems himself to be a joker of some merit, and whose flashes of humour have no doubt failed to elicit any response from the fair sox, delivers himself to the extent of a column in asking the question, 'Do Women Lack Humour?' Because no woman has ever set aside her household duties to impose upon the world a book setting out the wit and humour of a mem- ber of the fair sex;, because he does not know of any woman caricaturist, and because a woman often misses the point of a joke, he says they have no sense of humour. He does not allow that they may have a vein of humour which would, if assayed, prove of entirely different substance to that of the sterner sex; or that they seo fun in things where a man observes just the op- posite. Watch closely a number of women who have assembled together for half an hour and you will see that they will derive more wholesome laughter from their | conversation within that space of time than 1264 they would get by listening for a whole day to what is regarded by mon as the most superb humour. practical; to her there is nothing humorous in the idea of a woman-proposing to a man; possibly there is something sad in it; Certainly there is much that is exciting. And the limit of her jesting on the subject is to borrow the threadworn jest contained. in the proverbial advice of Punch.", But thore, again the dictum may be classified more as witty than humorous. But if you asked the question, Should men sew on shirtbuttons ? '- woman would probably. have several sparkling criticisms to make. And yet think how painful, wicked,` and wasteful that operation would be in performance to many men. A woman does not look at it in that light; to her it is not a mattor affecting the heart, moraly one of excoriated fingers and strong language. It appeals to the eye, and she is tickled by the mental picture of the unskilled one threading the hanged. little, one-eye'd thing, and hurling the thimble through the window. She never reflects that he may be imperilling his futuro, salvation by his expletives; the waste of his valuable time does not occur to her as tantamount to a reduction of his pecuniary resources. But Should a wo- man propose Ah! that is another affair. She is desperately eager to know whether the woman is accepted. As for the man's feelings, proposed to by three maidens, perhaps, on the fatal day-the humour of that concatenation fails to strike her. And the unpardonable difficulty he would be landed in to find suitable terms. for a forcible, but polite, rejection of what he presumably did not want, as he did not ask for it, probably impole her to think him a brute pure and simple. THE MISSION IN TIBET.

Queer Armament.

Calcutta, May 19.-A telegram from Gyangtse, dated May 14th, says :-This morning the Tibetans in the fort mounted, with great ceremony, a small cannon throwing a ball weighing three-and-a-half pounds. There was much shouting, blow- ing of trumpets and beating of drums. As soon as the first shot was fired, numbers of the enemy jumped on the walls shouting wildly, but when a maxim was turned on them they quickly disappeared.

A ball struck the hospital wall.

There has been more ring than usual from the fort to-day, and some of it was directed on the working parties strengthen- ing the defences. More reinforcements have been observed entering the fort. There are some indications that the enemy contemplate cutting our communication in, the rear. The parcel post was looted this morning, and four Mounted Infantry carry- ing letters were fired on by mounted men. A report has been received that the Tibetan army is being strengthened. Captain Ottley, with some Mounted In- fantry, reconnoitring to our left, found a monastery very strongly held by the enemy, who had prepared a regular position on the hill side. Captain Ottley estimates their number at several thousand. His small force of men were under a regular blaze of fire, but were fortunately able to retire with ut casualties.

A Shipping Case.

May 12. At the instance of four seamen of the steamer Isleworth, 2648 tons, Messrs Watts, Watts, and Co., managers for the owners, the Britain S. S. Company, Ltd., were summoned to appear at the Mansion House in respect of a claim for wages. The men alleged that the captain agreed to pay them consting wages on the colonial scale while they were in Australian waters.

For the defence it was urged that the captain acted without authority and without consideration, and practically under com- pulsion, The summonscevere dismissed. Notice of appeal was given.

Some time ago the Isleworth was under charter to the Pacific Islands Company Limited, and traded between Ocean Island and Australian ports with cargoes of phosphates. She is expected shortly at Newcastle from Colombo to load coal for Manila.
