For weary months they could not, with any degree of certainty, say that they would get a trialat all, and then when it did come on, they were knocked about from pillar to post to such an extent that they could not be blamed if they came to the conclusion that they would probably be far under the sod when sentence was pronounced upon them. When the time did conie to sentence thom, however, punishment came down upon them with a clap. The Chinese magistrate ordered them to be put to death and the other magistrates allotted them imprison- ment. The only thing that some one did not give them was their freedom. Then there a deadlock. No one knew which sentence to inflict. It could not be decided whether it would be better to Imbead them first and imprison them afterwards, or do After vice versa, or both at the one time. A while the conclusion was come to that beheading was too good for them and the old Chinese Magistrate's idea of settling the matter was set aside. Then there we further delay which lasted until a week or so ago, and at a further meeting the British Assessor and the Chihsien got together and sentenced Chan Yung to two years' imprison ment, and Chang Ping Yung to three years' imprisonment. After that they are not to be allowed in any foreign settlement in China, which is decidedly bad for them. since it is probable that they will not, if they are known to the Court, be allowed to rest in any Chinese town. There is only one place left for them then and that is Hongkong. We always seem to stand here with open arms waiting for men who have broken the laws of China. However, the two in question are not so bad as many who are already here. They have only been guilty of indulging in a little ultra- They have shouted out about their own country's milers in a fashion which is not in accord with the tastes of Peking, and the result is they will have to Huffer for it.
