Earl Grey, defending the Transvaal Labour Ordinance, told Parliament that Chinese labour was wanted, not to reinforce, but to replace Kafir labour. He declared the Kaffir a danger to society 'because he works hard for a year or two, and then lives on his savings. Some few of us in this country would be quite willing to run the risk of being similarly dangerous.

LATE TELEGRAMS.

The Tibet Mission.

Situla, April 28.-Colonel Younghusband

and the members of the Tibet Mission con- tinue to have a quiet time at Gyangtse and have heard nothing further from Lhassa

| except that transport is now being furnish.. ed to the Amban to enable him to keep his 957 promise of proceeding to Gyangtse to uego- tiate. The Deb Raja of Bhutan has mean- while sent a letter to congratulate the Mission upon the punishment it has inflct- ed upon the Tibetans, which, coming from a Tibetan Chief; is even more significant than the previous letter which was from the Prime Minister of that State. The Mission will wait at Gyangtae to give the Ambau an opportunity of keeping his promise. Gyangtse is the locality at which it has all along been intended that negotia- tions should take place, aud it lies entirely with the Tibetans themselves as to whether it will be necessary to push on hereafter to Lhassa.

from the Hunghutze. In our engagements against them, which havs taken place at different times, we lost thres Cossacks killed, one wounded and four missing.

During the 13th May a band of these Hunghutze, 300 strong, assailed the mines at Yentai, and they were repulsed with a lows of thirty men.

We have information of the appearance of a large band of Hunghutze, 16 versts (12 miles) to the west of Liseyang.

The patrols of the railway guarda that were sent out towards the west, along the Sungari River, could not reach Patuna, owing to the large number of bands of Hunghutze congregated there.
