Strange Behaviour of Otsu Children.

Some time ago, the chronicle)

mentioned the fact that

children of

| Otsu had organised themselves into: a kind

of association and that instead of the grown-ups parading the town on the newe of any Japanese suocess becoming known the, children formed into procession, and with bands and banners marched, through the streets accompanied by a few adults who assisted in the marshalling.

It would seem that the youngstars here become somewhat precocious, and what at first appeared quite a harınless demonstra- tion has developed into an annoyance to at least one man in Otau.

Some years ago, it will be remembered, a man named Nagai Choeuke, who has

This went on for several days until at last the alleged 'spy' could stand it no longer and was obliged to seek the protection of the police. THE GOMEZ TRIAL.

Accused Acquitted,

Dr Dominador Gomez and Buenaventura Kabalza have been acquitted by Judge Ambler. They were charged with conspir. acy to overthrow the government of the United States in the Philippine Islands. The trial lasted over six months..

After decision had been rendered Prose- cuting Attorney Smith filed a bill of excep tions to the finding of the court and then appealed the case to the Supreme Court. In view of the appeal the prosecuting at torney asked that bail be fixed for the de- fendants. The Court announced that bail pending appeal would be fixed to-day at three o'clock.

Senor Pina and Senor Gardiner, the as- sessors who sat with Judge Ambler during the trial filed an opinion as to their decision in the case. The prosecuting attorney mo-

ved to have the same struck from the rocords of the case prior to making the appeal. The Court, overruled the motion, and their statement is a part of the re- cord that will be submitted to the Supreme Court,

The bail during the trial before the court of first instance, by which they were acquitted, was: Dr Gomez, five thous and dollars, and Buenaventura Kabalza twenty-five hundred dollars. ⠀

The Court allowed the bond pending the appeal to the Supreme Court to remain the same as formerly. The bond was given, the same bondsmen appearing iu their behalf.

In connection with the case the Maniku Cablenews says-The decision in the case of Dr Gomez, while perhaps a matter of regret, was yet not altogether unexpected.

PUPILS attended at their own homes, While the evidence at first seemed ex-

ceptionally strong, yet ns the case pro-- ceeded it developed more and more that the chief pillar on which the government depended to establish its charges, was the witness Scarells, and it also developed that this pillar was exceptionally weak. Beneath the cover of words Judge Ambler practically intimates that Scarolla is a liar. With this prop weakened, the case of the government received a severe shock- shock from which it seems it could not recover, It may be that the Court, like a good part of the public, was morally convinced of Dr. Gomez' guilt, but unless the evidence submitted proved such, conviction could not legitimately follow.

So far as policy is concerned, the finding of guilty might best have subserved the interests of these islands, but oven the

Japanese Tactics. Apparently the Japanese (says the N.-0), Daily Ne) have no more intention this

of falling into the trap pre time pared for them by the Russians, by the Mo-tionling Pass, than storming they did in 1894 in the war with China, for according to a telegraphic dispatch received by the local mandarins a large Japanese force has occupied a strong post to the north of Fonghuangcheng and some miles to the south-west of Saimachi, called Aiyang, which leads one to believe that, as in 1894, the Motionling Pass is to be turned instead of being subjected to a frontal attack, which last would mean use- lowa loss of many valuable Japanese lives Once the and what is more loss of time.

Awful Warning to Japan. The Echo de Chine has a leading article by Xin which the Russians are consoled for their defents by being assured they have all occurred through their undervaluing their enemy. This will now be remedied, and in his concluding paragraph 'X' warns the Japanese what they have now expect:-"The wounded white bear will rise up again more terrible than ever, his fur bristling as he shakes off the few drops of blood which might stain his robe, and throws himself on his prey with little hought of pity as a slight irritation near his heart rominds him of the first bullet he received.

HOW MEN HAVE MISSED MAKING FORTUNES.

It is astounding how many men may every where be found who are discontented who feel instinctively that they were born for better things; who in some way, they scarce know how, have allowed life's golden opportunities to pass them by, failing to achieve what they believe might have been, uay should have been, theirs. No one can point to any definite defect in them, yet they have failed.

Why have they failed?

To the expert observer the cause is very obvious. Success is achieved only by ouergy, and energy is what they lack.

Now, energy, whether of the hand or the head, is produced by food. A starved man cau neither dig the ground properly nor think out a inatter clearly.

Has a man, therefore, in order to become energetic, merely to be supplied with good food? No; unfortunately the case is not so simple as that. The food that he eats must do its work properly; must make rich, pure blood, and repair the waste, which is continually taking place in his syste Food can only do this when the digestiorgans are in perfect work. ing order. In persons whose digestion is impaired food stagnates, creates gase in the stomach, and not only fails to properly sustain them but aggravates their complaint and poisons the system.

It is just here where Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup comes in. It is the one thing that cures indigestion, and all the numerous maladies of which it is the parent. and in that way may be regarded as an unrivalled source to energy.

When in Tasmania four years ago I was attacked by a serious illness,' says Mr Bowden, of 23, Pring Street, Woolloomooloo, Sydney, N.S.W. I could neither est, sleep, nor rest. A doctor whom I consulted said I was suffering from dyspepsia, and gave me some medicine, which patched me up for awhile; but I was soon as bad as every again. Another doctor attended me for two months; but I received no benefit from his treatment, nor at the hospital where I afterwards wont. My appetite almost cessed and the litt'e I ate disagreed with me. I became dull and languid, and everything was a trouble to me. Accepting the advico of a friend to try Mother Seigel's Syrup, these troubles soon disappeared. After a few dores, I felt better than I had done for months past. By the time I had taken fivo bottles I was restored to health and energy.

Just so. That is precisely the offoot that Mother Seigel's Carative Syrup produces. Not only does that medicino eradicate disease; it promotes health, and energy, thoso absolutely indispensable qualities in all who are called upon to fight life's battle. It is a paroly natural tonic, composed of fruits, roots, and herbs, containing no mineral substance whatever. For thirty-five years it has occupied the first place among all medicines whatsoever; and evidence as to its enrative power in constantly forthcom- ing from the sixfeen principal countries of the world.

Indigestion and biliousness are what some medical authorities term root diseases; that is to say, if those complaints are neglected, they develop into others even more serious. More often than not, medicines supposed to be remedies aro at first resorted to. Sometimes with for considerable these are persevered periods, resulting in loss of time and needlesu suffering, besides roudering the subsequent onre by Mother Seigel's, Syrup more difficult. In those circumstances Mr Bowden is to be con gratulated on having his nitention so carly. directed to Mother Seigel's Syrup, and upon the happy result of Efy men of it,

-The discussion on the opium ques tion which has been reported verbatim gives one some insight into the dialectio capabilities of the members of the Govern. ment, official and unofficial. The learned Attorney General took up the position that the Opium Farmer, which it was desirable to the Government had given a monopoly to protect, that the Anti-Opium Pillites were engaged in a traffle that was illicit and of little individual importance, and that it would be no hardship to anyone if they were deprived of their alleged illicit busi ness. If the Attorney General had limited the contention that the Government ought his range of view, as the Governor did, to to see that the Opium Farmer received full for the large contribution to the revenue of the Colony, his position might have been unassailable. But when the learned gentle- man proceeded to insist by a series of un- timely interruptions of other speakers' that the Anti-Pillite traffic was illicit, he only showed how far an extremely able man can

Now, the old-fashioned way of treating such a state of the body is to excite the stomach by purgatives or opening medicine, antibillous pills, and other irritating drugs, still ignorantly taken by many people. But the new, scientific cu e is to remedy the CRUSO of the disease by taking something which enriches the blood and purities it of Dr Williams' Pink Pills for bad netter. Pale People make New Blood. This New Blood, rich, pure and (what is very imper- tant to women) regular absorbs nourish. inent from the loud, and not only cures the Indigestion itself, lint also greatly s reng thens the body giving plumpress and a goal colour to the cheeks and lips. I chanced to read of a person who had been entrol of a similar complaint by Dr. Williams' Fink Pills for Pale People, and I d-cided then and there that I would try them. 1 was amazed at the improvement even before I had got through the first bottle. Food, for which I had had such a disaste, was now enjoyable, and by the time I had finished the contents of the second bote. I was in splendid health. I cou'd walk about with ease, and could Mr Vonn Flughes; for London, Mrs C. J.The mount the stairs without stopping for Allen and son, Mr C.
