We are often informed that the only auc- cessful inventions that see the light of day are those made by men or women in their own line of employment. The Buik Patent Furnace Door is another instance of this- fact, Mr Jas, Bulk, of Uphall Station Post-Office, after 20 years in Australia, where he worked at the gold mines and did 'not' make a pile, returned to his native city of Dundee. Here he took employ- ment as furnaceman, and whilst at that oc-

Whilst a fireman at Dundee, Mr Buik
was constantly informed that he must make the furnace consume the smoke or be fined. He tried many experiments and at last hit upon the happy expedient of admitting just the right quantity of air into the furnace in just the proper
manner.
r
To do this it was necessary to introduce a door which can be worked as easily ne the turn-cook of a paraffin lamp.
Hero Mr Buik reached down a home- made but neat little model of his invention and explained the manner of working.
The door is at once a furnace door and a ventilator.
The air is admitted through a series of air-holes similar to those in the base of a paraffin lamp burner. Combined. with these is a slide which regulates the admission of air, so as to permit the requir- ed quantity to mix with the smoke from the fire. The effect of its application is marvellous, and photos, of a chimney stalk before and after the operating of the patent door makes us think that the amoke- lose milenrium is at hand and a clear at-

We are quite at liberty to explain the working of the apparatus, as it is now fully patented and, of course, cannot be infring- · ed. It is needless to say that smoke con- sumption is a means of intensifying the heat, so that the appliance is at once a saver and an economiser. A very simple

The flame became at once duller, more smoky and cooler. Replace the chimney and there is of course, an increase of light and heat. Why? Because of the intensified draught and supply of fresh air.

The patent furnace doot serves the same purpose; and does for the mill chimney what the burner and glass chimney does for the lamp.
A paraffin stove serves still better for an example of its efficacy.
This appliance is not an untried one, for it has been in operation for some weeks at Messrs Aitken and Wright's chimney, Leith, The fireman at this work, in an interview with Mr Buik, said that he could not state whether he used more or less coal, than before the appliance was fitted to his furnace as he was not able to keep an exact account of the fuel con- sumed, but one thing he could state with certainty, viz., that were less ashes.. This is conclusive of more perfect
heat with less expenditure of fuel. combustion, and consequently of increased
Objection is often raised that air admitted into a furnace only coole the furnace. To conquer this difficulty has been the aim of many inventors, but none
have so far succeeded until Mr Buik has solved the problem by making the door itself heat the air current..

This is the secret of the success of the Buik Patent Door. The door is a solid furnace door, and will admit no air until the patenter slide is
put into operation, when the current of air passes in, is heated, enters the fire and consumes all smoke..
If the above invention is widely adopted -as it deserves to be-the
be the smoke of our
cities cannot fail to be greatly abated or even banished entirely, and Uphall Station will one day awaken to find itself famous, and its pustmaster s celebrity. 710

SKIPPING FOR HEALTH AND
DRILLING IN BED.
If we carried out even half the sugges tions for physical exercise which are offer ed to us in these tinios, nay, almost insisted upon by the health faddists (says a writer in The if old), we should be so continually stretching and pummelling and squeezing our pour bodies that they would eventually be reduced to the condition of those in- diarubber faces which children love to twist m all manner of shapes. Within the just two or three days, from different well- estecmel medical sources, have come olemn adjurations to indulge in thren Separate kinds of bodily drill. On the one hand,

This opens up an appalling Recent saltatory exhibitions prospect. have been convincing proof that English people are losing their once wholesome fear of appearing ridiculous; and if, as has been medically proposed, skipping is to be adopted as 'a new resource, at once cheap and valuable 1L0 exercico, it will speedily become a craze. There will be experts in skipping; there will be those who will be able to perform unsurpassed feats in the way of quick, prolunged, and fancy skipping, and will consequent ly be invited to exhibit their prowess to the less accomplished. We shall hear of skipping parties. We shall receive invitations from friends asking, you skip with us from four to six?' And then what sights may not be in store fur us? For we are told that skipping his a rejuvenating effect, and whatever the promise of youth is held out folk become reckless. We shall have inatrons of opulent charms doing skipping rope dances in dazzl- ing hose and billowy skirts, and those who should be potent, grave, and reverend seigniors running in' and doing double. skipping with the lads and lasses.

Nor does this exhaust the suggestions for physical culture of the hapless modern body. It is to be drilled even in bed, and this way, we are told, insomnia is to be Ankle cured and brain fag romedied. drill, knee drill, and hip drill are the exercises recommended. Practised in the dead waste and middle of the night and in the privacy of the sleeping apartment this form of gymnastics does not offor much scope for display. But it is well we should
have our serious moments.
