A steady decrease is noted in the export of German iron goods. The explanation given is that the German export trade has been greatly affected by the iron crisis in the United States, and by the consequent reaction on the English iron market. The export of iron during the month of January, 1904, was less than that of January, 1903, by 69.000 tons. It is believed that, if this decrosse continues much longer, the general production of 138,25 iron in Germany must be greatly reduced.

The falling off in the iron export is especi- ally noticeable in pig-iron. This shows a decrease of from 38,458 tons in January 1903, to 17,(67 tons in January, 1904.

According to a Report for the year 1903, issued by the Merchants' Union the port of Stettin has shown a retrograde instead of a forward movement during the last year, notwithstanding the gradual improve mont of economic conditions in Germany. The Return of ships entering the port in 1903 shows a decrease of 218 vessels,

a total loading capacity of 148,131 cubje metres, as compared with the totals for 1902. It is hoped that the project for extending the Berlin-Stettin Canal, which is to be discussed in the Prussian Diet, may. lead to some improvement.
