March 29.-At the inquest upon the body of Crossman, who cut his throat with a razor apparently to ayoid arrest upon a charge of murder, a verdict of folo de so was returned. Cressman murdered on One ENGLISH FREE WHEEL BACK PEDAL BUCK BICYCLE,

January 16, 1903, Ellen Sampson, a widow, One ORGAN and One PORTABLE HAR- whom he had bigamously married on January 15, 1903, under the alias of Soy. mour. When Crossman's wife returned to his house she found some cement in a trunk, and he told her that he was repair- 769 ing a stop. Later she found a tin box full of coment, and he told her in explanation that he was taking a would for the step. Crossman married seven women, five of whom are still living, mostly with children. It has been ascertained that recently Cross- man purchased some cement with a view of placing additional layers around the trunk which contained the body of a wo man, his object being to stifle the smell arising from the corpse.

Taken five years to make, and cost £100. Hondini took up the challenge, and per- formed his task yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large audience, at the Hip. podrome. The members of the voluntary Committee were so numerous that they al. most filled the arena, and had to be invited to stand back, or it would have been im possible to see Houdini. The handcutls were closely examined. They consisted of two loops on a bar, in which were the locks. They were of steel. No fewer than thirty. one wards formed the locks, which wore

nade up of locks within locks, and re- sembled in their construction those of a safe more than anything else.

Some force was necessary to fasten them on Houdini's wrists. He retired to his little cabinet, and his effort to release himself lasted an hour and five minutes. He came out once for a rest because his knees had become cramped, and again to get his coat off. The chal- lenger, the representative of a newspaper, refused to unlock the handcuffs for this purpose, and had strong comments passed upon him by the gallery, who were all in faveur of the performer. Finally, Houdini got the frock-coat he was wearing over his head, and then cut it away with a pocket- knife with his fottered hands. Not long afterwards he emerged from the cabinet with his hands free and the handcuff's unlocked and undamaged. The audience gave him cheer after cheer, and the mem- bers of the Committee of Inspection carried him shoulder high round the ring. Houdini acknowledged it was the hardest task ho His success was had ever been set. thoroughly, popular, and the scene which ensued was possibly one of the most remarkable ever seen in an English place of .entertainment.

Times out of noaber fires, which could easily live been extinguished had water been forthcoming with the arrival of the Fire Brigade, have been allowed to gather way and demolish the building in which they started, besides milicting serious dainage on the adjoining, houses, simply because no water is obtain- able. The fire which broke out on Sunday morning started apparently in the rear of No. Bonhan Strand and quickly spread to No. 165 Wing Lok Street. When the Brigade arrived, shortly after one o'clock, the fire was burning briskly, and the engines were set to work to pump wator from the Praya.
