detained in Tokio. There are other in- terests prior to the claim of the public for
news, and we recall the advice of Lord Wolseley, Tell correspondents nothing but lies. Lies' we got in abundance. The Sunday papers sold
out rapidly, when some Shanghai jour- nalist discovered that Port Arthur had been captured, and the evening papers of Wednesday throve on the invention (by someone in Tokio) of a report that the Russian fleet had successfully run the gauntlet of Togo's ships and was en route for Vladivostock. Nothing would please Togo better. If the Russians came out, they would never go back again, and certainly would never reach another port. Early suc cess in gaining complete command of the sea has made it possible for Japan to land troops when and were she plea- ses, and it is for her to decide when the great fight shall take place. There may even not be one. Russia may evacuate Port Arthur, as in former years she did Moscow and Sebastopol, and station the remains of her navy 761 farther north, and her army at Harbin

A MIMIC ATTACK ON
GIBRALTAR.
The sham night struck minde by the Channel F get on the fortress of Gibraltar
on the 10 kinh, proved of a very interest ing and instructive character. Befuge the ships 1. Et harbour, the Rear Admiral and all the Captains of the Fleet spent two hours on board truflagship Cesar, studying Vice Adiniral Lord (Uncles. Beresford's plan of attack, just as f the Squadron was actually about to give battle to 13 enemy. After leaving Gibraltar, the Fleet made a feint to the Westward, and when darkness set in it crept along the Mourish crust, and entered the Mediter

surrounded, and a rapid fire was directed upon it. With the aid of its powerful searchlights the fortress quickly discovered the ship and returned their fire. At the same time six torpedo boats steamed out, and were among the Fleet, firing torpedoes with collapsible heads. The Victorious was struck, the Prince George escaped one by about two Feet, and the fasor another by the merest shave. In the midst of this
heated action the 'cesse tire' was signalled,
as a French cargo steamer had collided with the cruiser I gue, whose twelve- pounder gun port was damaged.
Boats
from the Hogue and the Cæsir immediately boarded the stormer to ascertain her in- juries, and a carpenter and thrco ship- wrights remained on board all night repair. ing her bows, which had been stove in. She was eventually berthed at the Mole, and the dockyard people finish d the job. Lord Char es Beresford explained to his officers that the attack on the fortress was not car- ried out with any idea of deciding which side was victor. It was simply undertaken to instruct the gunners ashore, and to onable them to see what a "ship on such duty really looked like, and also to test the communications ashore from one battery to the other.

Mr A. Gordon Ward, chairman of the board of directors of the South China Mor- ning Post, Ltd., said it was a very great pleasure for them to offer this shield to the Hongkong Cricket League, to be competed for every year by the clubs in the League. This year cricket generally in the Colony had developed a great deal more than in previous years. He hoped that the cricket in the Colony would continue to improve, and that the shield would stimulate the clubs to do better things. On behalf of the South China Morning Po t he asked the president Mr T. Sercombe Smith, president of the of the Cricket League to accept the shield.
Hongkong Cricket League, said, on behalf of the League, he heartily thanked the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Morning Post for the very handsome trophy, and wished both long life. Ho did not know whether he did scrightly or not, but he assumed that Mr Ward was the moving spirit in the presentation to the League by the directors of this handsome shield. He surmised he was cryroot, as Mr Ward he know to be a true sportsman. and he begged to thank him for his work in the love of cricket. Mr F. P. Hett appeared on behalf of Po Tseung Chan's application to have the Po Fung Bank adjudicated bankrupt. An in- terim receiving order was made in this case on March 24th.

DEATH OF DATO MELDRUM.
By the death of the Dato Meldrum, which occurred at Johore yesterday (says the Straits Times of the 12th inst.), one of the oldest European residents in the Straits has passol away. It is nearly fifty six years since he first reached here from Calcutta by the puddle-wheel steamer, Eliza Penelope, which arrived on May 27 1848; 'and, since that time he has lived almost continuously in the country. His residence, Iskander Hall, is one of the most picturesque places in Johore, and is about the only particularly valuable real property which he leares behind, though at one time he claimed to own vast conces- |sions in Johore. These claims, somehow, he never definitely established, though he went home about them in the days of the late Sultan Ibrahim, and had subsequent difficulties in regard to them with the pre- Bont Sultan. During many of the later years during which he resided at Iskander Hall, his wife, the lato Dateon, was an in. valid, and the honors, of the house were Johnston, to whom the sympathies of very principally discharged by his niece Miss

The Chief Justice--I never knew a China man who did not have a relative to die whoa he wanted to get away. You first duty is to show proper respect to this Court. You have had actions brought against you, and instead of being to put in gaol, where you ought to be, you are made bankrupt, and Club Germania have had the actions stayed. Then having had that done you walk off to China without assisting the Official Receiver. Why did you not ask the Official Receiver for his
