TT has been decided to invite Subscriptions from the Community for the following objects in connection with the RUSSO. JAPANESE WAR,
to a conflict of whose magnitude he has but a hazy idea.
'Fancy puttin' up a prayer aboot a bit war like thon!' he said to me afterwards. The minister hadna much to due to be bothered wi' them. It's just yin o' thae foreign wars abroad in yin o' thae places ye gang to in a steamer. There's nae Black Watch nor Gordon Hielanders workin' at it, only a wheen o' folk that wear comic claes and eat ony kind o' trash. I wadna gie them ony encouragement."
'But war is always a dreadful thing, Erchie,' I ventured to say and our own war was abroad, too; that did not make it any the less dreadful,'
'Maybe it was,' said he, but it was in a country whaur the places ha'e Christian names. I canna be bothered wi' that fancy names they gie the places whaur this war's takin' place; it gies me a sair heid to read them in the papers. And I ken fine they're a' wrang spulled onywye. It's maybe a richt enough war, but there's nae
money in't for Mra Maclure in oor close, her that has a man in the Preserves. When he was ca'd oot to the front at the Transvaal, she was put on the War Fund, and did sae weel aff it that she started a green-grocery that's dsein' fine. She got a wee lend o'a lot o' weans frae the necibours and got twa shillin's a week free the Fund for each o' them, no mentionin' cairt- loads o' auld class. The only body, that I can see that's gaun to mak' money off this war is Duffy; he's put a bawbee on the bag o' coale since he read somewhere that the Rooshians canna get fochin' richt for the ice. "That'll put up the demand for coal," says Duffy, the same as if they were gaun to melt the ice wi' fires, and whips oot his lump o'chalk.'
'Ah! Erchic,' I said, it means inueh

Another message states that the Japanese lost two cruisers during the action, both being seen to founder through striking the mines, which they had previously laid down themselves.

Berlin, March 10. The somnambulist dancor, who has been causing such a sensa tion in Munich, proves to be an oven grea ter marvel than was at firat supposed.
Du Maurior's Trilby, when hypnotised by Svengali, sang in a fashion that marked her as one of the greatest of vocalists, Her counterpart at Munich, when put into a hypnotic stato, dances divinely, This somnambulistic dancer is the wife of a merchant, and her extraordinary perform. ancas have created a great stir. She is known as Mmo, Madelaine,
At first sho would not consent to demon-
strate her marvellous art publicly, but her discoverer and manager, Irofessor Emil Baguin, finally persuaded her to give three performances at the Royal playhouse of the Bavarian capital. It is now tolerably certain that after visiting Berlin the won derful dancer will appear in London.
Painters and sculptors at Munich who have seen her graceful performances are simply enraptured with the perfection of her harmony of motion, while the world of fashion is also anxious to show its apprecia tion, and Mme, Madelaine is overwhelmed
with juvitations.
The other day, while she was the guest of the Austro-Hungarian Minister, Count Zichy, she displayed hor singular art before of the Bavarian Royal house. She doneed Prince Leopold and several other members to a Symphony by Liszt and to Chopin's Funeral March.
