SCALP AND HAIR
Something for Mothers to Think About EVERY CHILD born into the world with an inherited or early developed tendency to distressing, disfiguring humours of the skin, scalp, and blood, becomes an object of the most tender solicitude, not only because of its suf- fering but because of the dreadful fear that the disfigura- tion is to be lifelong and mar its future happiness and prosperity. Hence it becomes the duty of mothers of such afflicted children to acquaint themselves with the best, the purest, and most effective treatment available, viz., THE CUTICURA TREATMENT.
Warm baths with CUTICURA SOAP, to cleanse the skin of crusts and scales and soften the thickened cuticle, gentle anointings with CUTICURA OINT- MENT, to instantly allay itching, Irritation, and inflammation, and soothe and heal, to be followed in the severer cases by mild doses of CUTICURA RESOL VENT PILLS (see below), to cool and cleanse the blood, are all that can be desired for the alleviation of the suffering of skin-tortured infants and children and the comfort of worn-out, worried mothers. A single set is often sufficient to cure when the best physicians fall.
Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap
Assisted by CUTICURA OINTMENT, for preserving, purifying, and beautifying the skin, for cleansing the scalp of crusts, scales, and dandruff, and the atopping of falling hair, for Boftoning, whitening, and soothing red, rough, and sore hands, for baby rashes, itchings, and change, in the form of baths for annoying irritations and inflammations, or too free or offensive perspiration, in the form of washed for ulcerative weaknesses, and for many Kanative, andseptle purposes which readily suggest themsolves to women, especially mothers, and for all the purposes of the toilet, patli, aud nursery.
CUTICURA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated) are prepared to meet the wants of lolicate women, and sensitive children, and are pure, sweet, and tasteless. They are beyond question the most successful blood purifiers and humour cures yet compounded.

An electric tramway track is almost com pleted, and one may see the last stages of contructing the solid cement bol in which the rails are laid. In another month, when the race week makes gala time for all the world and sporting fraternity, electric tran sit will be a reality. It will not be rapid transit, if the sedate conservatism of the colony affects it as it did the cable road to the peak, and the clumsy English cars are already the laughing stock of the Ameri- cans of the community.
Hongkong shared in the boom and· · prose pority that came, to all the east with the China-Japan war of 1894. Silver fell and prices rose, hotel charges and rents doubled in season, until the American occupation of Manila brought a second boom.
Then came the north China disturbances, of 100, and the transports of six nations, their attendants, fringes, and followers came this way and gave another hoist to prosperity.. The leading Hotel living reached the brazen demand of twelve, six- teen, and eighteen silver dollars a day for. a frent room, with board, could go no fur- 50ther, but adroitly quotes its prices in pounds sterling, English, so that one pays by the daily rate of exchange, and no man 50 knows what his next day's board bill will

Servant hire has advanced some, the prices of market products little, however, and to read the Hongkong market reports. each day would make an American house- keeper envious. Beef, chickens, egge, fish, fruit, and vegetables are one-half and one. third the price in American cities, and in all housekeeping no provision is made for 50 the servants. One pays them a fixed wage by the month and they provide their own food, nor does the employer always lodge

thom.
Therefore, one asks the reason for this extravagant charge at the hotels, and finds it only in the greed of the residen: Ear- opean stockholders, who demand large 10 dividends and further the advance in rates. Ten per cent is itiful return for his in- vestment, the resident thinks, und one heare freely discussed the concerns that
pay 30 and 40 per cent. The traveling public, the tourist, and globe trotter are considered BD legitimate objects of pillage and spoliation, chosen victims for white Hongkong's fleec ing. The tourist may protest.- and denounce the impudent robbery, but he pays and goes, and other victins crowd in | his train.

One hears in Japan, and he hears with more envy in America, of the perfection of Chinese servants, the perfect treasures. whose precise, well ordered, unvarying 50 service makes life all an easy dream, a bed of roses in China. But now, there is a canker in the rose, a crumple in the rose leaf, and 316 European women, practically all the housekeepers in Hongkong, hav prayed the acting governor and the council for relief from trials that are too much for human flesh, coupled with climatic condi- tions.
