That must depend on the Thibetans. If the Lamas preferred the arbitrament of the sword, we must accept the challenge.

Lord Ripon ridiculed the idea of the invasion of India through Thibet.

Lord Rosebery said it was impossible to recall the Mission till it was possible to leave a firm impression.

Lord Lansdowne said the Government's - view was that the independence of Thibet" should be recognised, but, if any Power was to exercise preponderance thero, it must be Great Britain. (Forwarded by Mesars Kelly and Walsh).

The Heathen Ühinee' is not the only person whose ways are 'poculiar.' Miss Deane reveals to us the Italian antiquary at home. Not only his sordidness but also his delight in the possession of gonuine antiques in cleverly woven on the warp of a story slightly out of the common The heroine and the romance are alike Anglo-Italian. The authoress would probably agree with the Italian who ro marked that a summer in England was like looking up a chimney, while a winter was like looking down one.' English dulness is darkened as a background for Italian brightness. So it is larkely with the characters. At the one extreme is the Britisher dour-but true as steel: at the other is the sprig of Italian aristocracy, lively-but frothy. Midway is the heroine, chirpy and bright, but also with strong ten- acity, deep feeling and loyalty of soul. The movement of the story in general is rapid, with quick changes of fortune around the gaming-tabo, the studio, the antiquary's shop, and family heirlooms. In particular, the romance moves slowly but surely to s desirable end. All's well that ends well

Great Demand for Autographs.

A pamenger to Colombo by the 8.9. Mongobiu anys that, besides the chase of the vossel by the Russian destroyers, the voy age was eventful for the prosence on board from Marseilles as far as Port Said of Mr Joseph Chamberlain, who is visiting Cairo, Mr. Chamberlain's arrival on board was void of any demonstration, except that when he was recognised the passengeru naturally gre enthusiastic over him. especially in tho second-class. Mr Chamberlain seemed well and hearty, and was most pleasant and friendly on board to everyone. Mr. Chamberlain WHA cbeered by the second-class passengers, and i it was arranged that he should visit the second-class saloon, where the ex-Secretary of State for the Colonies supplied his autograph to a great many of the pass engers. He was also besieged for hiw antograph by the 1st saloon ladies, and good-naturedly acceded to all the requests made. Mr. Chamberlain received a great send-off as he went ashore at Port Said, On the day before Port Said was reached the second class passangers asked him to empire in cricket match between a Colonial ard » British uloven. Ile seemed to take the grestest interest in the game and started the match, while, after it was over, Mr Chamberlain was kept busy for Dearly an hr writing his name on books and on post cards. There w sa regular rush on the ship's post-cards for that purpose.

On another occasion the chief engineer had a visit from Mr. Chamberlain in the engine room, along with some of the other distinguished passengers, and the chief afterwards asked him to put his name on two cards wh ch he vory willingly did. On the night before Colombo was reach d Lord and Lady Chelsea distributed the prizes which had been gained for deck games or as the result of a very successful fancy dress ball. The voyage of the Mongolia was pleasant throughour, and the incident in the Red Sea only added a little excitement to it. Times of Ceylon.

Paris

The French Squadron.

The following telegram from appears in the Standard: -M. Tissier, M. Pelletan's principal Secretary at the Min- istry of Marino, has denied to a representa tive of the Matin, the report that the French Government intends to reinforce BLEND its Fleet in the Far East. The cruiser, probably the Descartes, which will be sent out to that station, is to replace the Bugeaud, which has completed its com- mission. The four torpedo-destroyers to go out are not to reinforce Admiral Baylo's Squadron, but to join the mobile defence of Saigon. They were being sont, added M. Tissier, in accordanco with a scheme for the organisation of the various Naval bases, which the Minister had drawn up some months ago. As part of this programme, two submarines recently sent to Bizerta,

dock to Diego Suarez; while, later, a and two torpedo destroyers and a floating torpedo flotilla will be sent to Dakkar. As to the submarines, M. Tissier said that, as 500n as enough had been built, they would be distributed among the various Naval bases abroad. At present this was impos sible, the number for the home ports being insufficient. According to the Moniteur de la Flotle, the French cruisers Pascal and Gueydon, which wore in Japanese waters, have received orders to join, the main body of the French Squadron, which will remain in the China Sea;
