THE GEAP GLOVE FIGHT IN CALCUTTA,
Details of the Army Champion's Victory.
It is some considerable time since we had a big fight in Calcutta, says the English- man, so that when it became known that
Bliddie And Heavy Weight Champion Boxer Surgoant Smith, of the 10th Huasara, tho
of the Army, had arranged to fight Jack McAuliffe, the Light, Middle and Heavy Weight Champion of India, for the Cham- pionship of India and stakes of R10,000, sporting circles became greatly agitated. and supporters ranged themselves and backed their favourites very freely indeed. Bert Delaney trained McAuliffe, and Lam- phier, assisted by a number of military friends, prepared the Hussar for the conflict.

Since then he has fought very many times more successfully than un- successfully, and up to the night of the 27th ultimo, had reamed his position as the premier boxer of India.

SERGEANT SMITH,
on the other hand, is not so well-known. Though in the Army his fame is spoken well of, and he has gained laurels at home and in Egypt, he had not entered into the knowledge of sporting circles in India as a professional pugilist till he vanquished Imm phier in Mussoorie last year. Taking all this into consideration it was no matter for marvel that McAuliffe should have appro printed the support of the majority of spor ing men, who laid odds on him with a liberality which bespoke confidenco in their choice.
The Rink was crowded, and a few. items were provided on the programme before the big tight.
THE FIGHT.
After an interval of ten minutes Lamp heir and Delany, the trainers of the two champions, s'epped on the stage and busied themselves over the arrangment of their principals positions. The Judges, etc., had then to he picked. There was a consultatio and finally some Judges' names were proposed, but Lamphier raised an objection, and it was decided, both parties agreeing, to do away with the services of Judges and simply have a time-keeper and Referee. Mr W. S. Burke, of the Indian Field, consented to do the duties of time-keeper, and Mr. W. 0. Recs agreed to act as Referee. The fight was then announced as being one of 20 rounds under the conditions already mentioned.
Smith was the firt man to step on to th platform. He was muftiled up in his over- coat and looked collected. Be was follow. ed shortly after by Me Auliffe, and both men received ovations on their appearance. They then disrobed, and it was clearly obvious that they were.
IN THE BEST FETTLE.
Swith is of medium height, but well made and wears a slight moustache. Mc. Auliffo appeared to be atrifle smaller and less muscular, and his weight was at. 12lbs. while that of smith was 11st. 11lbs. This is not the first time that McAuliffe has fought a heavier man than himself. Ho fought James Ryan for the heavy-weight championship of China, Ryan's weight be ing 12st 8lbs., while that of McAuliffe was Dat. 44lbs. and though McAuliffe was beaten in the ninth round he made a brave show.
It was about 11-15 when the tight com- menced.
SMITH TACKLED HIS MAN VIGOROUSLY
at once, and it soon became apparent that McAuliffe must do his best. There was no feinting hardly, both men hitting into each other hard and swift on each contact. McAuliffe, however, showed some very good style, but it was unavailing against BOOKKEEPING, &c., &c. furiously and was becoming a bit winded his impetuous opponent, who rushed him

when McAuliffe hit him nently with his loft, knocking him down. In the second round Smith began a bit more cautiously, and this gave McAuliffe a chance of plant- and a right handed upper cut on his neck. But that seemed to be McAuliffe's last effective stoke, for Smith, now thoroughly roused, placed his blows swift and sure, and, what was better-hard.

FIVE TIMES DID MCAULIFFE GO DOWN under his opponent's terrible blows and on the last occasion he could just rise before the 10 was counted, when time was called, and he lived into the fourth round, which was the list. Strange to say, the crew and mates were placed under no such restriction, and we have been enabled to gather the following facts concerning the bombardments of Port Arthur. from their point of view, It is stated that during the tombardment of the 1th February, the forts at Port Arthur wore not at all damaged, and have not since suffered any damage. The battleships Retvizan and Czarevitch and cruiser Palladn were put out of action in the torpedo attack on the night of the 9th February, but the For Pallada is now completely repaired. three weeks after that attack there was fir. ing nightly, but those in Port Arthur at last became so used to it that no one bothered to turn gut.
