The Tibet Mission. Chumbi, February 25.-During his stay at Tuna the Tiopuk Jongpen had two in- terviews with the Tibetan generals who Guru to visit him. came over from Camp Guru t The attitude of the Bhutan Government is well disposed and reasonable.
The Jong pen endeavoured to persuade the Dapons to come to terms. The Jongpen urged them to send a duly qualified representative. The interview, however, was without result. The Jongpen is lodged in a house near the Camp specially prepared for his reception. He had three interviews with Colonel Younghusband and was shown over the Camp and witnessed some practice with Maxims and sevenpounders. He inspected the hospital and the bakery of the Com missariat and expressed his admiration at the comploteness of the arrangements. He was especially impressed with the Maxims, one of
of which he fired, and a typewritor which he saw at work.

THE PRESS CENSORSHIP IN
JAPAN.
The Last Straw.'
The authorities may like to be reminded at the present time that there is a
• It is the last proverb in English lore, straw that breaks the camel's back.' When instructions were issued to the newspapers some weeks ago decreeing the exclusion of news relating to the move- ments of troops, &c., the newspapors agreed to abide by the wishes of the authorities, though oven auch instructions scomed a breach of the freedom of the Press. The foreign journals have none of them, so far as wo are aware, showN inclination to depart from the any original instructions, but the last batch have called forth general protest. Although such absurd interference with the liberty of the Press is amusing in one way, it is serious in another, and is calculated to do great deal of harm to Japan. Almost aimultaneously with the article that appear

the Japan Herald. Having referred to the fact that the foreign Press generally had raised its voice against the ridiculous re- strictions, our Yokohama contemporary saya that there is a general condemnation of the instructions as vexatious, and it would be well for the Japanese Government to consider very thoroughly whether such vexatious restrictions will not be productive of more harm than good. Already in-, quities are being made as to whether the Press censorship is not being carried out more with the intention of keeping the Japanese ignorant of the state of affairs than with the object of concealing the Japanese movements from the enemy.
The authorities probably do not realise how, by the issuing of these instructions, the reputation of Japan as a nation of liberty and freedom is being damaged Kobe Chronicle.
The Camphor Trade.
1
The Foochow correspondent of the N.-C. Daily New writes:Recently British subject residing here told your correspondent some remarkable things about the conduct of the Japanese in the interior of this (Fukien) province. He informed me that some time ago he ascended the Min River to Yenping and boyond to buy camphor, when he found that the Japanese were seizing all of the drug that they could ny their hands upon. They claimed that they had been granted a mo-
nopoly of it and that no one therefore had

them. My friend had been assured by the native officials that they would give him all possible protection and that the camphor ! would not be detained by them or by the likio. So he proceeded to bring the cam- phor ho had purchased-about $3,000 worth tu Foochow. But when he reached Yerping, it was held by the officials, whose explanation was that they feared trouble from the attempts of the Japanese to detain it. At present the tension is very strong between the people and account of the high- the Japaneso on handed proceedings of the latter, who go about armed and who have been forcibly seizing camphor during the past four or

The romance of the two began on the maiden voyage of the Oriental steamer Rosetta Mart, from Hongkong to Manila just one year before a St. Louis audience saw the violet eyed Miss Phillips on the Olympic stage. Mr Harden was making for the Wold Fair a tour of Asia, Austra in, India and the Philippines with John Barrett, now United States Minister to the Argentina republic, but then Commis sioner-General of the World's Fair. Miss
Phillips was & member of the Frawley Denuntie Company, the way from Hongkong to Manila and thance to play long engagement at Calentra, India. Youth was at the helin and romance at the prow of the Rosetta Maru on that exceptionally sentimental use, and the Hon. John Barrett neted as Cup.d's assistant in keeping a clear course for the two young souls steering straight toward the snug haven of matrimony. He was helped in this by a dark-eyed southern girl, also a member of the Frawley com- pany, who had gone to the same country achool with Mr Hardee in their childhood days, and who introduced him to Miss Phillips, her Frawley chum.
