TOBACCO.
According to a recent authority, the in- jurious element in tobacco smoke is not nicotin, as has generally been supposed, but is precisely the same as that which exists in the fumes of burning charcoal- namely, carbon monoxid-in both cases the result of incomplete combustion. The dizziness and stupor, the trembling of the limbs and the hands, the disturbance of the nerve centers and of the.. circulation, palpitation on a slight effect, and the feeble pulse may be the indications of either carbon monoxid or nicotic poison-
ing. But since one ounce of tobacco gives no less than one fifth of a pint of pure car- bon-monoxid gas when smoked in the form of cigars or in pipes, it not improbable that to a very large extent these symptoms are due to the carbon monoxid;
