Relish for food and power to digest it are essential to sound health. When digestion fails, as in dyspepsia, both body and brain are starved and the patient becomes languid and weak, incapable of active, vigorous effort, or clear, sustained thought. Thirty drops of Mother Seigel's Syrup, taken daily after meals, makes food nourish you. As a digestive tonic it has no equal.

DEATH OF A CHINESE.
A Charge of Manslaughter. Man Kum Shing and Man Chan Shing, two lads aged 18 and 13:years respectively, were committed for trial. yesterday on a charge of manslaughter.
It appears that both boys were catching fish in a pool at Shatin, in the new Territory, when the owner of the pool came along and objected to their presence. A row insued, during the course of which Ki Kum Sing, the owner of the pool, received certain injuries. He died on the following day, and the police were informed. Both lads were then arrested. The doctor's evidence showed that death was due to pneumonis, which might have been con- owing to a ruptured spleen. Deceased had a wound on the leg and a mark over the right eye, neither sufficient to cause death.

Gauging by some British public utterances, as reported in the Colonies, there were some eminent speakers, who were still in leading strings, preferring what would lead to foreign trade develop- ment rather than the encouragement of British trade and the best interests of the British Colonies.
Referring to proposed Chinese immigra- tion into South Africa, Mr Seddon said. there was general indignation with the Homo Government for not recognising it as an Imperial question. It would embitter the Boers against us and delay Federation, and, instead of British immigration, would ensure British emigration from Southe Average. Africa. He was satisfied that, if Rand 14.28 mine owners would establish emigration depots in the United Kingdom, they would' get as much labour as was wanted. One English workman was equal to three Chinamen underground. On economic grounds the employment of white labour would be more profitable to the Rand mine owners, to say nothing of collateral advantages accruing to the Trans vaal Colony. If Rip Van Winkle could this day awaken on the snow-clad slopes of Fujiyama and rub the red rust of forty year's sleep from his eyes to gaze upon the broad streets of Japan's capital, he would never gloan from first impressions that the country was engaged in the most desperate war of its existence. Yet there is war, and war with sufficient brilliant beginnings to justify this child of the world's old age' turning topsy-turvy upon its little square head out of sheer excoss of joy. To the Right Honourable A. J. Balfour, Sm,-In forwarding to you our Report. we desire to make a few observations which do not come immediately within the terms of our reference, and which cannot, there- fore, in our opinion, be placed upon re- cord in a formal document.
While the arguments by which we aus tain the proposals contained in Section II. of our Report are fully stated, those which have led us to the conclusions upon which Seotion I. is based are incomplete, inas- much as we have thought it undesirable to analyse the constitution and functions as well as the actual and potential uses, of the Defence Committee.
