taking in all a total of some forty-eight miles in extent. Sixteen so-called Russian *railway guards' have also been shot or had their throats cut by mounted bandits during the oporations above noted,
With reference to the unfortunate Japanese officer caught by the Russians while attempting to blow up the Sungari river railway bridge, it is reported that would never have happened had the un- lucky officers not been too eager to do their work. As a matter of fact, there was a large body of mounted Hunghutza thirty. miles away ready to support them had these three oflicers only consented to wait twenty-four hours longer. There wore four Japanese ready to do the work, of whom one happened to be with the Hooghutze at the time in order to lead them to the vicinity of the bridge for the purpose of covering the operations. Either the three captured officers thought they saw an opportunity of blowing up the Sungari river bridge before the arrival of their covering party, and so were caught by the Russians, or they were diecovered by the latter while loitering in the neigh- bourhood and suspicions accordingly aroused and so were arrested and tried by court- martial; at any rate when the Hunghutze appeared in the vicinity they saw a whole regiment of infantry and soine 300 cavalry encamped near the railway bridge. Scouts sent on to find out the truth soon returned with the sad nows, and a body of Russian cavalry being reported coming towards the place where the Hunghutze wore drawn up, the latter had to retire, taking the fourth Japanese officer with them.

There was a curious discrepancy in Mr Watkins' and ment for interest. Mr Watkins said that Mr Nervegna's partner for interest on his before the 1st of March he negotiated with

On the other hand Chan A Fook gave evidence that he understood that he was to be paid in cash, and it was only on the 17th or 18th of April that he made the alleged agreement with Mr Nervegna. Although Chan A Fook said that he agreed with Mr Nervegna to receive interest from the same date as Mr Watkins, he could not say what date that was when asked in the witness box.
