FOR BABY'S SKIN
SCALP AND HAIR
Something for Mothers to Think About EVERY CHILD born into the world with an inherited or early developed tendency to distressing, disfiguring humours of the skin, scalp, and blood, becomes an object of the most tender solicitude, not only because of its suf- fering but because of the dreadful fear that the disfigura- tion is to be lifelong and mar its future happiness and prosperity. Hence it becomes the duty of mothers of such afflicted children to acquaint themselves with the best, the purest, and most effective treatment available, viz., THE CUTICURA TREATMENT.
Warm baths with CUTICURA SOAP, to cleanse the skin of crusts and coales and soften the thickened cuticle, gentle anointings with CUTICURA OINT- BIENT, to instantly allay Itching, irritation, and inflammation, and soothe and heal, to be followed in the severer cases by mild doses of CUTICURA: RESQL- VENT PILLS (see below), to cool and cleanse the blood, are all that can be desired for the alleviation of the suffering of skin-tortured infants and children and the comfort of worn-out, worried mothers. A single set is often sufficient to cure when the best physicians fail.
Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap
Asalated by CUTICURA OINTMENT, for preservine, purifying, and beautifying the skin, for cleansing the scalp of crusts, scales, and dandruff, and the stopping of falling hair, for softening, whitenlag, and soothing red, rough, and sore hands, for baby raslios, Itchings, and chalings, in the form of bathe for annoying irritatious and inflammations, or too free or offensive perspiration, in the form of washes for ulcerativo weaknesses, and for many Fanative, antecptic purposes which readily suggest themselves to women, especially Dothers, and for all the purposes of the tollet, baib, and nursery.
CUTICUBA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated) are prepared to meet the wants of delicate women, and sensitive children, anil are pure, sweet, and tastaless. They are beyond question the most successful blood puritters and humour cures yet compounded.

Mr. Charles Duguid, the writer of the financial letter to The World, makes the following comments in the issue of 19th January:
MISLEADING DANK BALANCE SHEETS,
On formor occasions attention has beerr drawn here to the fact that bank balance- sheets do not represent the true state of the companies' finances; that they are not full and fair statements of the position, however much auditors may certify them so to be. They really make the companies out to be in a weaker position than they are; there are hidden funds which the balance sheets do not disclose, although they are supposed and bärtified to state the true position of the companies. There is ample evidence that the accounts of the railway companies are an erroneous in this respect as are those of the banks; but the accounts of the banke are much simpler,
and somehow or other one is inclined to look for more strict probity in account- keeping on the part of a bank than even on the part of a railway company. In any case, the matter as it ffects the lanka is just. now brought into special prominence by disclosures and admissions made by the in- stitutions themselves in connection with the ease with which they are waiting down their Consols and other high-class secu-

THE AUDITORIAL CONSCIENCE.
In one or two isolated cases bank audítors are bold enough to point out that the balance-sheet does not represent the true position of the company. For instanco, in the case of one bank, the auditors give their certificate as to the correctness of the accounts, only subject to such remarks as that the marketable value of the bank's. investments is in excess of the amount stated, that the provision for bad and doubtful debts largely exceeds the amount 359 required, that no credit at all is taken for the fittings and furniture in the balance. sheet, and that the premises stand at far less than their value. It is officially notified that Admiral Alexieff has telegraphed that the Japanese re-attacked Port Arthur at 945 on the morning of the 24th instant with torpedo boats, and endeavoured to block the har bour by sinking four steamers filled with combustibles. The Retrison supported the

The fire against the torpedo boats was maintained until dawn, and day- light revealed four steamers destroyed and eight torpedo-houts steaming towards the Japanese fleet. The crews of the steamers took to the boats, and some were drowned. The entrance to the harbour is clear. Tho enemy loft in two divisions, pursued by three Russian cruisers, which returned
