Jan. 29.-Consternation prevails at Johannesburg, at the prospect of a discus. sion in the Imperial Parliament upon the Ordinance sanctioning the importation of Chinese for work in the mines. St. James's Gazette, in referring to the proposal of the Premier of New Zealand that the Commonwealth, Canada, and other colonies should join in a protest against the introduction of Asiatic labour into South Africa, and to the protest forwarded by Australia and New Zealand, writes that Mr. Seddon has an admirable faculty for thinking imperially, perhaps it is exer- cised rather to excess on some obvious occasions, when to think locally would be a virtue.

Allahabad, January 31-The Pioneer deeply regrets to hear of a disastrous ox plosion which took place in Bhatinda Fort, belonging to the Partiala State, on Thurs. day afternoon last. The people of the Fort had had, orders from the Durbar to remove a quantity of gunpowder from an old magazine. It was while this was being done that the accident happened. From this pieces of buildings and fragments of human bodies were scattered about the city which is built round the fort. The Railway medical officer, Dr Decks, was soon on the spot and was indefatigable in his exertions in attending to the injured. The clanging of the gongs re. echoed all day, and the noisiest part of the meeting was undoubtedly outside the on- closure in the football ground. The pari- mutuel and sweepstakes were well pat- ronised, and the cries of the swe p-makers
