there are no Chinese. So far, there has been no hostile movement. In spite of alarms and rumours, the current of Chumbi-Tuna news reports all quiet. It is officially announced that, owing to the threatening attitude of the Thibetans as- 741 sembled at Guru, it has been deemed necessary to stiffen Colonel MacDonald's force; therefore 200 Mounted Infantry, with British officers, left Umballa yesterday for Darjeeling; and two Maxims, with detachments, leave for the same destination to-day.

In regard to the troops leaving Umballa for Darjiling it appears that owing to the open nature of the country which the Tibe Mission has reached at Tuna it has beon found that a mounted escort is likely to be more useful than one composed of infantry mon untrained to ponies. Thero is also some difficulty about food. It has been decided therefore to replace about a hund red of the men already in Chumbi Valley by Mahomedans drawn from various regi❤ ments in the Punjab and trained to ride. These have been collected at Umballa and are now under despatch. No additiona Maxims are being sent.
February 3.-There have been no further meetings between Colonel Younghusband. and the Thibetan delegates. The latter in ist upon the retirement of the Mission to Gnatung as the basis of negotiations.
February 6.-The latest from the Thibet Mission states that a new Chinese Amban is shortly expected at Lhassa from Pekio.
There is no sign of any activity in the Thibetan camp at Guru.
Two days snow has fallen at Tuna, and the snow is forming drifts tefore a violent wind.
The health of the Mission escort at Tuna continues good.
An ekka road is being constructed over Tang La.
London, February 3.-The Marquess of Lansdowne, last night, referred to the in- utility of Chinese intervention with Thibet, and said that a Chinese envoy left Pekin in. December, 1902, for the express purpose of arranging the difficulties with Gros
45 Britain, and he had not reached Lhassa
yet. The Government
dia were satis fied that there had no contravention- of the existing Act, because the Mission was political and not military,

When the brigado arrived on the scene, under the command of Mr Hallifax, the flames had a good hold of No. 352. As usual the want of water hampered the efforts of the fire men from the outset, the force of water availablo being insuflicient to send the water to the second floor of the building. The house in which the fire broke out ie the second house in a terrace, so that the firemen were able to take their hose up a lane and play on the flumes from the rear. Several lengths of hose were taken up the lane, and into the adjoining houses. When the top floor of No. 352 fell with a crash, sonding dense volumes of smoke and sparks into the darkness of the night, the water was still very weak. By degrees the water gained volume, presumably after the residents had taken enough out

THE NEW FRENCH REMEDY
THERAPION.
TRADE
This successful and highly popular remedy, as played in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Postan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind and surpasses everything hitherto employed.
THERAPION NO. 1
in & remarkably short time, often a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, superseding injections, the use of which does irre- parable harm by laying the foundation of strictura and other serious diseases.
THERAPION No.2
for impurity of the blood, scurvy pimples, spots, blotchies, pains and swelling of the joints, secon dary symptoms, gout, rheumatism, and all diseases For which it has been too much a fashion to em ploy mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of sufferers' teeth and ruin of bealth. This pre- paration purifies the whole system through the blood, and thoroughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body
THERAPION No. 3
furnervouscahaustion, impaired vitality, sleepless: ness, and all the distressing consequences of early error, excess, residence in hot, unhealthy climates, &c. It possesses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.
is sold by all
THERAPION the principal
Chemists and Merchants throughout the World. Price in Bagland 2/9 & 16. In ordering, state which of the three numbers is required, and observe above Trade Mark, which is a facsimile of word: THERAPION as it appears on British Government Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every package by order of His Majesty's Hon.
