CONTAMINATION.
The Report on the contamination of shellfish, just issued by the Royal Com- mission on Sowage Disnosul, contains some interesting information, and, in particular
u noteworthy pronouncement, which should go far to relax the somewhat oppressive rule of the bacteriologist. The subject falls within the purview of the Commissioners on account of the pollution of foreshore heds, and laying-grounds by the dis- charge of sewage. Attention has re. peatedly boen drawn to the conveyance of disease by this channel, and opeter typhoid' has: ecome a familiar expression.

for dealing with the evil, the question arises how dangerous are to be distinguished from innocent oysters. 628 Hitherto considerable reliance has been placed on bacteriological evidence, and the presence of a certain o ganism, or group o organisms, known as the Bacillus coli, has been held to indicate serious pollution. The
Commissioners
appear to have entertained some misgivings about this redoubtable microbe, and they instituted an WYNDHAM STREET investigation into its distribution in Nature M. MOORE,
with striking results. Dr Houston, their Proprietress, bacteriologist, examined over ona thousand oysters taken from different localities, in- cluding some of the purest waters and some of those obviously liable to pollution. The examination was carefully mado, and
