workman in the tube had to practically face death as the heavy sons dashed into the tube and literally smothered him, and if he had been dragged out of the tube occasionally he would have been drowned like a rat in

Great cred t is due to Mr J. MoLachlan, Chief Engineer of the Okhla, and the on- gine room staff in general for the very dif- fault foat they have accomplished. The chief hails from Glasgow, and has been 23 years in the employ of the British India Steam Navigation Coy, who are to be con- gratulated on having the services of so able and resourceful an engineer. It is under- stood that the Company intend recoginising the services of those on the ship with a substantial bonus, as when occasion came for the deck and engine room crews to work together, it was done with a cordial spirit that was most gratifying to the Officers.

The hand of Dame Hecla Cortlandt, a lady of property, is sought by the Syndic, but His Excellency also plays with the affections of this im- pressionable old lady, while there is a pret ty, if subsidiary, love affair between the Corporal of the Hussars and a dashing Vivandière. It is one of His Excellency's jokes to make the Hussars behave like ballet girls. In fact, he turns every thing topsy-turvy until one of his prac tical jokes recoils on himself, and he finds himself reduced to the tanks in the Hussars, while the Syndic becomes the Governor and an unwilling sccepted lover of Dame Hecla, the sculptor is raised to

the rank of Count and the physician of Baron, and the Corporal jumps over all the intermediate grades and becomes a full- blown Colonel of Hussars and marries the Vivandière-everything happening as it can only do in comic opera.

HONGKONG CLUB 1. GERMAN CLUB.

Tho Bowling match between two sides re- presenting the second teams of these clubs took place on Friday and Saturday over the alloys of the respective clubs. Mr Wood. cock captained the Hongkong Club team, and had a very strong eight, but, unfor- tunately, the troubles in the north deprived him of the services of three or four naval men, with the result that only a team of six could be got together. Just now the Ger- man Club is very strong in bowlers, and is quite able to pick three strong teams. The result was that they had no difficulty in winning the present match, having estab- lished & substantial lead on Friday night.
