other schools which had arisen, and which offered advantages to special sec. tions of the community In particular ho mentioned the Kowloon School, and lie could not refrain from expressing his ad miration at what he called the altruism of Mrs Bateman, who had parted with many of her best scholars without a sigh or, if with a sigh, a very small one. As regarded the education in English, of the girls of the Chinese school, he felt that a word of ac knowledgment was duo to Miss Bateman
But
for the alle way in which she had furthered that object. Her pupils had in a short time, reached to a considerable measure of knowledge in English and this in spite of the fact that Miss Bateman had been hampered, in several ways during her years work, As an instance he mentioned the fact that, for a portion of the time, a moinber of the staff had to be seconded upon other duties which threw an additional class on Miss
hands. Bateman's
he alluded specially to the outrage which incapacitated hor from duty during a part of last term. He was glad to say that she was con- pletely recovered from its effects, and he was pleased to hear that not only had the stolen property been recovered, but the miscreants themselves had been caught and were now paying the penalty of their villany. Proceeding, Mr Irving Craved their patience for a moment while he bowed before the time-honoured customs of such gatherings as that, and presented the rising generation with some kuggestion for the better guidance of its conduct in the future. He then directed the scholars' attention to the old maxim * Hard work brings success, and said that Sometimes such was not always the case, success might come without hard work, and, therefore, he asked them to consider how the maxim would rend_transposed, Success brings hard work. He said that it was no empty paradox, but a fuct which they might verify for themselves, As an instance, he asked which soldier and which civilian was he who worked
Inst harder during the
WAT than any? Not the private in the ranks, nor the clerk in the dockyard, though they worked very hard. If he hid to guess he should say the hardest workers of all were the men whose success had already brought them to the top of the tree, Lord Kitchener and Mr Chamberlain. It was not that which brought King Edward to the throne. But how much spare time dil they think he had? Woll might their national seer put the words into the mouth of King Henry, Unhap- py lies the bead that wears a Crown, and therefore when they considered the innumerable calls upon her time they must, with great heartiness, tender their thanks to the lady who had lengthened a long day's work by attending at the school to distribute the prizes. (Applause).
Little Miss Kitty Hung then prosented Mrs May with a basket of flowers, and the proceedings torminated with the singing of the National Anthem.

CORRESPONDENCE,
HONGKONG TRADE STATISTICS. To the Editor of the 'China Mail.
Hongkong, 29th January, 1904. SID, Your article of the 27th inst. tends to prove two things amongst others, one, that the official body have striven to get the Chamber of Commerce to sanction that reliable statistics of the trade of Hongkong be compiled, and the other, that one section of the commercial community, which has no Imperial ideals, and which does not care one jot whether the balance of trade is in favour of the Empire or not, has, up to now, succeeded in persuading the other section that what would be de trimental to them would as a consequence be detrimental to the Colony. It is no. thing of the sort. Statistics would bo neither detrimental to the Colony nor to the merchants; quite the contrary, they would be of great benefit to both..
Hongkong is a British Colony and not an International Settlement, nor a part of China. The tonnage entered and cleared at the Harbour Office places this Colony s the third port in the Empire when compared with the tonnage entered and cleared at other porta. But in whose favour is the Balance, of Trade? Is it in favour of the Empire, Germany or America; and if it is in favour of the Empire, what proportion is due to the Principal Workshop; and if it is not, why not? These are the questions of Imperial reliable statistics we have; they may be of interest to the shipping community, and no doubt they are, but they are of little inter- eak to the merchants. Steamers now-a days do not carry cargoes for their own ac |count except in very few cases where an owner wants to get a steamer out to & certain port to get a return cargo. They carry what the merchants buy or sell, and it requires no business experiencs to be persuaded that were it not for the mor chants there would be no Banks. Shipping Companies, Docke, Warehouses, Insuranco l'ompanies, nor any other undertaking. Take away the orchant from this Colony, and the island will become again a White- grave, for the inhabitants that would remain would not have the wherewithal to keep the efficient official staff, who have turned the island into as healthy a place as any other part of China.

H Ord- Me-progress in the East, seem to be the only ones who are really upposed to statistics, for the Officials and the Foreign Merchants acknowledge that the value of reliable statistics is not questioned.' I can only 8 find three reasons why the Chinese object 17 to statistics-elther that they think that 16 the Chinese Customs would have a check 0 on the values they declared when importing 3 goods into China, or that it would enable the Chinese Customs to lessen the smuggling trade, or that the Chinese fear that the foreigners, by knowing exactly the trade 6 carried on in the Colony, might, in time, become again real merchants and bo no longer their commission agents, as they are, to a great extent to day.. The first two Teasons do not certainly prove that statistics would be detrimental to the Colony, and if my assumption is correct, he who does not want to pay to the Crown what is due to the 31 Crown will find very little sympathy 22 amongst Britishers. As to the third reason,
