the lucky protection thus afforded, Lieut. Jolly must certainly have been brained by the violence of the blows.

While some men held Lieut. Jolly on the ground, others pelted him on the head. with clods of 'earth, which, fortunately. were not heavy enough to inflict grave. injuries. Lieut. Illins fared worse, for a swinging blow on the back of the head with one of the heavy instruments used by [natives threshing corn inflicted a wound 14 inch long, cutting through to the bone, and the blood gushed out profusely. By some happy chance Lieut. Jolly managed to free himself from his assailants, and, on rushing up to the aid of Lieut. Illins, the two officers were able to break through High class the crowd and bolt. Before they had got

very far they had the good fortune to en counter some sepoys, and the affray thus ended before any permanent injury” had heen sustained. Lieut. Illins got his wound bandaged and afterwards sewn up, and was able to return to camp. His tunic was covered with blood.

The Scottish Sabbath.

The Earl of Aberdeen had an odd experience of the Scottish Sunday on his arrival there on the 6th ult. Arriving at Edinburgh from London with the train duo at half-past in the, morning, he could find no hansom or other conveyance. Learing his valet in charge of the luggage, the Earl wandered out in the cold morning along Princes-street in search of a con- veyance, but not a cab or vehicle of any kind could be seen. Passing into one of che off streets, Lord Aberdeen met a milk van, and getting the driver to pull up, induced the man to go to the station with him. Mounting the van, Lord Aberdeen returned to the station, and getting the luggage up drove in the milk van to his club.

WASHINGTON, January 8. United States Senator Harins, of Ohio, has given notice that he will throw all of his influence and energy into the forth egining fight for a further reduction of United States import duties on Philippine sugar and tobacco to 50 per cent. of the present rates, and to admit to the United States free all other Philippine products.

This declaration on the part of Senator Hama means in other words that he is in favor of the Lodge proposal, which voices the wishes of President Roosevelt with reference to future Philippine legislation, and it is significant to note that as yet no objections from senators have been heard to the Lodge proposal. President Rouse velt seems to have the Philippine situation well in, hand, just as he had the Cuban reciprocity meKAUFE, through the senate.

When the case was called to-day, Mr Smith said the opium was found on ac cused's promises on Friday, January 8, but accused said that it was put there by others without his knowledge. The evi- dence showed that on Jan. 8 Excise Officer 222 went to the Magistracy and swore cer- tain information. After the information was sworn, a warrant was issued and given to the Excise Officer before 9.30 a.m. The Officer, according to his statement, left the Court and went down to the Opium Far- mer's premises, where he locked the war- rant up and went on his beat.
