A Plea for Efficiency. The following article, which appeared in. The Steamship of December, should prova of great interest to the Institution of En- gineers and Shipbuilders, and others;—
Sir William Allan, M.P. for Gateshead, delivered a stirring address on Efficiency at a meeting of engineers, held in Dundee
last month, of which city he is a native. He said he was proud of his native place, and he traced the rise of humanity in efficiency up to the iron and steel ages. He said that since Pritain was destined to bo the cradle of the steam age, the growth of efficiency was over synchronous. But other countries lifted their heads to me- chanical skies. I every age there has been an abundance of rophets, and the things they have foretold have generally been of a disastrous character. Yet till this old world of ours wags on more or less merrily, and supports a larger wumber of people in a greater degree of comfort than at any former period.
