invincibility spread consternation among the people. The Government at Seoul applied to China for assistance, and on the
8th Juno a small force was landed in Cores. It found very little dificulty, so great was the prestige of China ten years ago, in suppressing the insurrection, but this entry of Chinese troops into the pen- insula gavo a pretext to Japan also to send troop, although these were not actually wanted. Events moved so rapidly that the Tonghaks were speedily forgotten, but in July Japan was demanding in the name of reform great many concessions, not from Corea but from her suzernin, Chias. On the 1st of August the jealousy of the two nations had resulted in the outbreak of hostilities.
T
For Sprains
HE right tinio to treat a sprain is the minute you get it, and the right remedy to use is CHAMBERLAIN'S PAIN BALM. You can say what you will about this or that thing being good for a sprain, but Chamberlain's Pain Balm beats them all. The quicker you rub it on, and the more you use it, the sooner the sprain will be gone. Even if Chamberlain's Pain Balm gets you back to work one day, quicker than other remedies, it will pay for itself several times, but it generally cures a sprain, strain, or a bruise a week before anything else, and a week's wages amount to a good deal to most people. Some Facts About Mr A leyne Ireland.

We take the following from The Times
of Ceylon:-
It will be rememberal that in Septem- ber The Times published an article from the pen of Mr Alleyne Ireland seriously reflecting upon the civil servants of Hong- kong.

He simply colonial administrations. travelled under the aegis of that institution.' Mr Ireland, it appears, is an Englishman -born in Manchester in 1871-who mi. grated to America many years ago. He was a bright young man and a clover writer. Some articles that he wrote concerning the Boers attracted the notice of the late Lord Pauncefote, the British ambassador at Washington. He was practically brought ut by that distinguished diplomatist and wrote a number of articles on the question of conly labour, which points to the fact that he had been in the East before. Ho was also popular as a lecturer and could command his 100 dollars a night for that. work. After a time he ingratiated himself with the Chicago University authorities and btained permission to use their name for the work he intended to carry out in the East. Thus he was simply a man, said Mr Pearson, who tried to make as much as he could gut by writing up sensations. He had as his so called managor, an American named Dr Thorpe of Boston. This Dr Thorpe came to Mr Pearson one day and informed him that Mr Ireland had obtained concession of 20,000 seres of land in Bri- tish North Borneo, which he wished to ex- ploit, if he could secure the necessary capital, for its gutta percha. Mr Pearson declined to have anything to do with the speculation, and suggested that Mr Ireland night obtain what he wanted in England where the people knew something about it. My Pearson thought it ‘a great shame' that such a man shouhl turn on his hosts As he did. He would be shannod wherever
he went, particularly in America.

A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. This is the age of research and experiment, when allnature, so to speak, is ransacked by the scientific for the comfort and happiness of man. Science has indeed made giant strides during past cer ury, and among the-by no means least important discoveries in medicine comes that of Therapion. particulars of which will be found in another column. This preparation is unquestionably one of the most genuine and reliable latent Medicines everintroduced, and has, we understand, been used in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the well-know Chassaignac, nud indeed by all those who are regarded no authorities in such mitters, including the celebrated Lallemand, and Roux, by whom fi was some tirue slace uniformly adopted, and that It is worthy the attention of those whorequire such a remedy we luk there is no doubt. From the time of Aristotle downwards, a polent agent in the removal of these discases bas (like the famed pal losopher's stone) been the object of search of soine hopeful, generalis minds; and far beyond the inere power if such could ever have been discovered-of transmuting the baser metals foto gold is surely the discovery ofn remedy so potent as to replenish the failing energles of the comfimed roue in the one case, and in the other so effectually, speedily and safely to expet from the system without the ald, or even the knowledge, of a second party, the poisons of acquired or inherited disease in all their proteau forms as to leave ho taint or trace behind. Such is The New French RemedyTherapion, which may certainly rank with, if not take precedence of many of thediscoveries of our day, about which no little ostentation and uoise have been made, and theextensive and ever-increasing demand that has been created for this medicine wherever intro. duced appears to prove that it is destined to cast Isto oblivion all those questionable remedies that were formerly the sole rellance of medical mes. Therapion may be obtained in England, direct. from the proprietor, and of the principal Chemists and Merchants throughout the Colonies India.
