Life for the working class in Scotland is undeniably hard, and when it does not lead to an upward striving after something better it produces a type full of many things unlovely; but happily the former in common enough to be esteemed a characteristic.
I write out of a wido acquaintance with the social conditions of both English and Scottish country life, and I am persuaded from my observations, that the smaller Scottish towns and villages aro dull, disinal

of population.
T
Roughly speaking, two-thirds of the Scottish people live in villages and small industrial towns of less than 30,000 in- habitants. To know anything of life in such a dismal burgh as Coatbridge is to understand how hopeless it is for a young Scot desirous of 'getting on to remain in his native place much beyond the years of boyhood. He may, it is true, aspire to become a mine manager, a prosperous grocer, a successful whisky-seller, and in time reach the distinguished position of provost of the burgh; but, barring the first-mentioned accupation, these are by no means satisfactory marks for the ambi tious mind to aim at, and the call to the larger life in the cities is imperativo. Even in the most ordinary branches of artisan occupation the field is very limited, and thousands without a spark of ambition in their nature have to move elsewhere in search of work.
A PROLIFIC RACE.
Another and most important factor tend. ing to make the Scots people so migratory is that rural Scotland is noted for large faulies: the Scots are fecund race. Thus, for generations there has been a constant pressure of population wearing down from the north. The villages first discharge their overdow into towns, and these in turn send streams to Glasgow and the other cities; but here again it is as if we had so many lakes of people with riters flowing in from the north and others flowing out to the south for not even the Second City of the Empire can satisfy the ambition or the Decessities of the country' sons, and the prospect of fair lands and rich tows south
of the Tweed is irresistible.
Chiefly in the working classes do these remark apply but in the professions the Why is it, same inluences are at work.
:
one is sometimes asked, that we encounter no many. Aberdeen journalists in England? Way are so many of our leading banks and insurance companies officered by Scots ?
In the first case, because Aberdeen Un- iversity attracts the young countrymen in large numbers, and the supply of able and fitted for the well-educated young men work of journalism is so large that wages are low, and whatever the Seat has learned from his Bible Lo has at least been pro- foundly impressed by that divine truth. The labourer is worthy of his hire.' Hence he goes where they pay the labourer betior, and that happens to be in England, Glasgow and the larger cities are contres of keen business, and out of their experience therein young Scotsmen come equipped with splendid training in such professions | as banking and insurance, but the lucrative situations are already filled, and these young men must "get on,' so it is South ward bo' -- Dužly Mail.
