On the whole too he seemed fitted for literary work. Ho revelled in books, and nothing seemed to please him more than to get away among the fields and dream. TTARPERVILLE' and Grounds, GAR. Ho had been well educated too. His father HA

The next day was Christmas Day, and You said that you longed to write a great book telling out the sorrow, after the service in our Chapel I went to and strivings, and loves, and hates of men.Tresmeer Barton to see him, Up to now you have known nothing about it, but porhaps-"
I coased speaking here, for I was arrested by the look in his eyes. There was some. thing positively wonderful about it.
"Thank you, Mr Polskiddy," he said and went away.
For months after that I scarcely ever saw Ewart. Occasionally I caught sight of him at our Methodist Chapel of n Sunday even. ing, and sometimes ng summer camo on again I noticed him roaming among the fields alone, as in the old days. But I had no long talks with him as in years gone by. And yet, I don't know how it was, but I was not He neither appeared His step was

"Is it?" he replied, and ho laughed. "It's a great triumph," I said. "I've had a greater than that!" he said. ** Eh? ** "Yes.
It was I and not the other all the time," he said,
"And so~" "Yes, wo are engaged - but, I Polskiddy, you were quite right.'

When August came, I managed to have

"No, not that. That can never be kill- ed. I do not suppose I shall ever see her agsin, for as you know George lives in Lon- don, and when he marries her they will live there, and I shall never seo them. Un- s" and here he hesitated-"I go to London to live."
"Do you ever think of doing that " "No one knows what will happen," he replied.
But what was the hard fight " I asked. "To kill my hatred for George Archer," he replied.

Pelham House,
When October came, I thought Ewart Jooked quite jubilant. I saw too that his stop was firm, and he walked like a con- 865 queror.
"Perhaps he's heard that Miss Leigh is not engaged to George, after all," I thought, . But when I asked him he told me that he knew nothing about it.
Just before the next Chistmas I heard. Ethel Tresmeer had again invited Mary Loigh to spend Christmas at Tresmoor Barton, and that she had accepted the invitation. George Archer had also come to

and those of us who knew them fully ox- pected that their engagement would be -made known.
As usual I was invited to the Barton on Christmas Eve, and when I arrived I found all things gay and joyous. Mary Leigh was there, looking as I thought more beautiful than ever, although as I imagined she ap peared a trifle more subdued and thought- George ful than on the previous occasion. Archer was also there, looking as smart and aristocratic as ever. Report had it that George had succeeded well at the Bar, and was beginning to make quite a name as what I think they called a junior. When I looked at Mary Leigh's left hand, however, I noticed that she did not wear an engage- ment ring, neither as far as I could see did the two behave as an engaged couple.

He was just kind and polite, but nothing more. Of course I knew his story, and wondered whother Georgo Araher was the favoured man, and once as the two men stood to. gether, I noticed that Mary Leigh was watching them. It was then that I felt that George Archer, in spite of his aristo. eratio ways, looked poor and little beside Ewart. My young friend was at this time

Larcenies from Silk Dealers.
The usual reports from Chinese silk and cloth dealers that certain Laillées have absconded are beginning to be received by the police. About the end of each year these reports come in with unfailing regula... ity. The usual complaint is that a tailor received certain articles of silk, etc., to be made up, and ran away with the goods No guarantee is obtained from the tailor in the first instance, and when the bailloo has cleared out the matter is reported to the police. These reports usually entail much work, necessitating inquiries being made all over the Colony, One such case has

EFFORT TO LEGALISE CHINESE.
A Motion Before the Council, -
LONDON, December 30,
Sir George Farrar has introduced a motion in the Transvaal Legislative Council in favour of the importation of Chinese labour to work in the mines.
The Attorney-General, Mr H. F.
Peter's Church wore also in attendance and their singing during the evening was hear tily appreciated by the audience. The report as presented by Rev. T. Wright showed that good work had been dune It the Church, the Institute, and among the prisoners in the gaul. Although the results were not as good as they would have liked them to be, still they had done some excellent work. The senior Chaplain was away in England during the scoater part of the year, and the burden of who work had fallen on the junior chaplain, who, although he had received ablo assis would have been done if both the chaplains were here. Tho finances were in rather an unsatisfactory condition, as the balanco against the Institute now stood at $500. The sailors who visited the port substantial ly subscribed to the funds of the Institute, and the Captains of the various vessels were boginning to acknowledge that the Seamen's Instituto had the soldiers' welfare at heart. Visits paid to the ships in the harbour numbered 2,670, and on every occasion they were heartily welcomed. Good work on n larger scalo would be done if the Institute were enlarged, said the Rev. gentleman in conclusion. Addresses were also delivered by Rear-Admiral Robinson and Mr II. E. Pollock, and recitations and solos wound up a very pleasant evening.

Answer: The Public Health and Build- ing Ordinance's definition of external air differs from the Board's definition of external air in the following respects. («.) The Public Health and Buildings Amend ment Ordinance's defi ition requires an open space in all cases to be 13 inches wide, and to extend parallel to the building for at least five feet. (b.) The Board's definition
the side of an existing and new building to count if it extends three-fifths of the depth of the buildingand is 13 inches wide. (c.)
