Will you fight me ?"
. I stood for a moment considering. If we fought, and either or both of us were merely wounded, the result would be no better than if we left the ground without a scratch. The only good of fighting could be that one of us must die, It I were to kill him, should I over know happiness again? Could I go back to the widow with the blood of her husband on my hands, and talk to her of love? It was impossible. Then, if I were to fall by his hand, I asked myself, what would it mean? It would mean leaving that unhappy girl without anyone to stand between her and her ty rant. I would not do it,

'You know before you were married that Lady Hardcastle and I were acquainted with each other,'-hero I jump ed to a conclusion, but I knew what Elva was, and knew I was guessing aright. And she told you that we had been lovers, and that her heart was given to me. After that you should not have married her. At least you took your chance.'
That's your opinion, is it, ch' he said, scowling at mo. 'Let me advise you to keep your opinion to yourself for the future, if you act upon it, it will be the woran for you.'

"Then suddenly Sir Noel vanished from off the face of the earth. He went out shooting one day, and simply disappeared. Search was made for him in all directions; zowards were offered for news of him; and advertisements addressed to him by his wife appeared in the agony column of the Times for months, Some thought he had been murdered-some were inclined to think that Lady Hardcastle herself had murdered him; others supposed that he had only gone off on a shooting expedition, and would turn up by-and-bye. The dock at Bingo, in the Inland Sea, was oper ed only the other day. It is a medium sized dock. In addition to the nine private docks there are three Admiralty docks, and both at Saseband-Kure there are two floating docks for the repair of torpedo boat destroyers. Sir F. Swettenham's Resignation.
What is an Undesirable'? How are the Agents or Master of a steamer to distinguish them?
In the writer's own experience, the greatest Undesirable' he ever met, was an Austrian Jew, who travelled first class, talked in large sums of money, set up in business with a flourish of trumpets, swindled sover well-known firms, not ex- cluding the British Government; went bankrupt, and was deported ;- all this in the space of six months.
I will horo give three illustrations that havo actually occurred on board the ship of which I am Mastor, within tho last six months, shewing how very difficult it will be to determine who are, Undesirables,' that is before they difficult it is to deal with one of these cases have committed themselves in some way. when they are known to be Undesirables' within the meaning of the Law.
1st-Left Shanghai, amongst about 250 deck passongors, noticed four Europeans. On enquiry, found them to be four seamen paid off by mutual consent from their ship in Shanghai in the possession of properly issued deck tickets and with fifty 10 sixty dollars in cash each. They conducted themselves orderly, and were respectably dressed. On arrival in Hongkong they disembarked with the other passengers. That evening. at 7.30 I observed two of these same men drunk and disorderly and acting as beasts in the Queen's Road.

past reported 'rinderpest,' To Mr James Walker, man- ager of the Dairy Form Co, at Pokfulam, we believe, belongs the credit of any success which has accompanied the treatment of the disease, and in Mr Walker's opinion the disenso was introduced and spread in the Colony by straw brought from the mainland. of his treatment led him to believe in the efficacy of this method.'
Dr Hunter and Mr Gibson, however, after a searching investigation, have arriv- ed at the conclusion that the disease which has hitherto decimated the cattle of the Colony is not rinderpest. They write:
From our own preliminary examinations, however, the appearances presented by the diseased animals-intra-vitam and post- marlem-differed from those usually regard- ed as pathognomonic for what is generally recognized as true Rinderj-est. The absence of certain symptoms and the characteristic and constant post-mortem appearances coupled with the presence of a definite micro-organism in the blood and tissues have led us to the conclusion that the epizootic is something very different from Rinderpest, and required investigation. Accordingly, we requested the Government, through the medium of the Sanitary Board, to grant us such facilities as would enable
us to do so. Permission having been got,
the enquiry was commenced early in June
