On one occasion she faced alone a fierco and enormous gorilla, while her cowardly escorts took to their heels, and, later, sho spent some weeks among the can- nibals in the Rembwe country making friends of natives whose lardere were stocked with human joints. In this country,' Mils Kingsley wrote, the dead are cut up and kept in larders, pre- cisely as civilized people keep frosh

ment. The bones are scattered about the country, which is difficult of locomotion on account of the vast numbers of concoaled man traps.

Mrs Theodore Bent, another lady whose apucarance suggests rather the drawing- room than the trackless deserts, bas out- stripped many a male explorer in her daring and her defiance of fatigue and danger. Not long ago when she was traveling with her husband in south Arabia, she had many a narrow escape from cowardly bullets, and once she was ordered to dismount in order that her th oat might be cut. Mrs Bent, it may be interesting to add, travels in 'a tweed coat and skirt coming well over the knees, and breeches, gaiters and shoes, She wears a pith hat, and always sleeps in a hammock.

nature of the growth. Professor Orth, moreover, would certainly have expressed himself much more guardedly, and would not have spoken of the growth removed as entirely benign' had the microscopic examination of the latter left any uncer- tainty as to its true nature. All theso circumstances, as well as further reas- suring statements as to the illustrious patient's condition, make it right for (13 to insist upon anticipation of a speedy recovery. The condition of the Emperor's larynx will be carefully watched by his medical advisers, and fuller clinical details will probably be given if it appears hat any useful purpose would be served by so doing. The courage and good senso of the Emperor in taking the world into his confidence are to be commended. He has donbtless, by so doing, prevented the dis- semination of much sinister rumour and. much idle gossip.-Lancet.

Triad Disturbances in Kwangtung.

Canton dispatches to Shanghai stato that a large body of Sanho Hui, or Triad Society men, has suddenly appeared in Leichou préfecture, Kwangtung province, with the object of making that region their headquarters to which members of the Bo- ciety can flock. There are said to be near- ly 2,000 of these Sanho Hui already in Leichou and more are flocking daily to the society's standard. The Sanho Hui is an offshoot of the Taiping rebelion whose mem- bers have sworn to oust the Manchus and are spread about throughout the provinces of Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Yunnan, Kuci- chou and Fukien. The reason the leaders of the Society have selected Leichou pre fecture for their headquarters is stated to be due to its boing on the seacoast where aums and supplies, expected from agents and sympathisers in other places, can easily land, There does not seem to be the usual pillaging generally accompanying such ven- tures so that the people of Leichou have scarcely made any serious complaints to the provincial high authorities at Canton nor

asked for troops,
