HOW ANIMALS STOP TRAINS THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER

With the human 'kulder-up' of Lezing we in this country are fortunately not familier, but most railway men of ox- perience an tell tales of trafic stopped by boasts, birds, and are fishes, says Tit-it. Who first is, naturally, the most commen; for in spite of the warning of George Stephonson respecting the co," which has become proverbial, furnaces and there cannot always prevent their liva stock from straying on to the line.

One such case may serve as an example. 1 occurred in Forfarshire, where a train ran into 120 sheep, killing eleven and in- Juring others before it could be pulled up. As a result this stoppage cost the railway company besides the expanse of litigation, war £25. Birde base been known to stop trains by becoming janured in the signaling apparatus, especially at night, when they fly For the lights.

There was a carioes caso soņic years ago in the Fun country, where a wild swan was the means of halding up trafficby becom ing entangled with the tulogesph wires in such a way as to stop all communication; thus bringing a mewhat important pas. onger train to a standstill until the fault was discovered ani remedied. Live fish sra, semingly, the last thing likely to stop traits but they have been known to do no by being; sucked into the wateringapparates for locomotives at country stations; eels, and ovon trout of considerable size, having bocu captured in this way,

Abroad, trafic is frequently interrupted by all kinds of creatures, froaïelephants to jasorts. Not long azulone of the former senpol from a show, charged a train upan na American line, and stopped it, with re- salt-disastrons to the attacker; whilst sini. lar occurrences have been registud from Jadía. Insecto, especially in the form of -dite natu, have been responsible for triamrý stoppages on hea in tropical countries wing to the destruction by them of wooden portions of the permanent way, and from this fact has grown up the manufacture of

t'klopers of iron or steel, now južto a considerable industry in the North of Eng

end und in Scotland.

The Uganda railway is probably more exposed to stoppages by animals than any ther, and lions unt infrequently 'hold-up it trains, to which they appear to have a peculiar antipathy. One bugo besat which was known to bave killed seropteun people : sttacked a van, but got a wann reception from its occupante, who were prepared for i hip.

Thoth engines and vins have guns pro- vided for their defence, and sometimes for sport, for it is on record that a driver stopped his train in order to have a shot ta gaines fowl; whilst ostriches are also the cause sometimes of like delays. So they are also on certain South African lines, where they bury thoir heads in the sand bailasting of the track ahead of a train, involving either a stoppage or the running over of what may be a valuable bird from an adjuvant “run,'

In Canada deor sometimes stop trafic by running before the engine until exhausted, but the most curious stoppage of the kind in a cold country occurred not long ngo between Kanysheff and Lansor, in Siberia, There, whilst un engine was running at low speed, a Lear Eprang on the tender and attacked the driver, who fortunately sucocuded in forcing him back on to the fine, where he was caught by the wheels and so injured as to cusily despatchod.

In India lately a train was stopped by a large Bah. This gccurred during foods in Calcutta, whore the water rose in the streets to the height of the car wheels, and the tish, carried by the current, bacamo jama. ed in the spoken, thus causing the vehicle to come starelstill,

Lord Roberts' Resignation..

In another column we publish a telu- gram from the Manila Cullenews announcing the resignation of Lord Roborte. It will be interesting to know that on October 28, the Liverpool Post gave currency, through its London letter, to the following state- ment:It is reported at the service clubes that Lal Roberts has tendered his resig .nation. The Commander-in-Chief bad audience of the King yesterday, and there is very little doubt that the interview had reference to the state of affairs at the War Office. The recent changes, and still more the prospective changes, have produced much perturbation in Pall Mall, aud it is at least very doubtful, whether Lord Roberts will continue to bold his present position -under the now condition of affairs. A re- prosentative of the Westminster Gazette, who made inquirica ut l'all fall, was infor med by a responsible official that the state- mont was devoid of foundation. No doubt the telegram of the Cablenes found birth in this rumout.
