A QUESTION. OF THE CUSTOM OF THE FON'T.
stem.
Intimations.
STEAM TO CANTON.
It has been alleges that according to the Splendid new Steel Twin Serw
Steamer custom of the port, no qualified receipts,
*KWONG CHOW," are ever accepted in the case of shipments 1474 Tonz, Captain WALKER, leaveR HONG. His Lordship oxamines Mr James KONG for CANTON st 8.30 p.in. on SUNDAYS, TUESDAYS and TOURS. Gibson's evidence on this point. Mr Gib DAYS, returning to Kongkang the follow- son declared emphatically that no qualifieding days, leaving Canton nt 5
Unexcelled accommodation for First Class p.m. receipts in regard to tes were ever accop Passengers. Ship lighted throughout by el, but in cross-examination he was forced Elecricity. qualited adwit that
receipta *ore often given.. It would be unreason. able to expect a ship to accept goods for transhipment to foreign ports without the officer on board having the power to hay: The packages are, in my opinion, frail.'
10
I would be doing violence to ely that these words amount to a refusal, much less a wrongful refusal, to carry the goods. The shipper may, if he disputes the officer's opinion prove the contrary,
notwithstanding the terms of the officer's receipt. The contents of the receipt are not so binding on the shipper as to stop him from impeaching their correctness, especially when he can place hinfself in a similarly advantageous position by making
protest ustry on the receipt.
Flis Lordship therefore finds thore was no wrongial refusal to carry the packages in the part of the defendant Company, and that it was entirely due to the misguided and incunsiderate action of the plaintiffs' gents who were in board this steamer that the goods were not carried. His Lordship is inclined to think that the actual fiets were misrepresented er disclosed by their tally clerk to the plaintifs. The plaintiff action is dismissed with costs.--- Pines, Ceylon.

Food, well Digested, Is the Origin of Strength.
Every act, every thought, every movement of muscle or mind, uses up some of the substance of our bodies. Food repairs this loss, but only when it is digested. To be strong and healthy, assist your stomach, liver and kidneys to do their work pericetly by taking Mother Seigel's Syrup, whics contains food-digesting ferments and geatle tonics for the stomach, and iras cared mure dyspeptics than any other medicine in the world.
SEIGEL'S
SYRUP
Mr. C. F. Alorsner, French Hock, Paarl Div., Cape Colony, says, Since 1835 I have always kept Mother Suige's Syrup in stock and had a good side in it. I myself suffered severely from liver complaint, and after using a bottle of Mother Seigel's Synp waéquite cured.”
