THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER

Since the issue of one last circular dated the 20th ultimo, our Yarn Market remain- ed rather unsteady and the Chinese dealers being absent from this colony to their native villages to enjoy the present Harvest and Lantern festivities, no business of any importance had to be noticed, and through | 1814 the tightness of money amongst the merchants here as well as in the interior, combined with the basitness of the im porters, prices gave way from fifty cents to two dollars per bile on Jagt Mail's price: and a very limited business transpired. Nearly the bulk of the business was done during the fint low days of the fortnight, A very latterly market elsed quist. žímite) business transpired in No. £lls at a A reductim of 8 10 13 per bale. The Fassing of the Turnpikes.

The rezos al of Hampstead toll-losure and gale leaves the Metropolis in the possession of a single inement of the time when it was impossible to leave the town behind without passing through a turquke, writes our London correspondent. Erect- l with the object of paying the expenses of repairing the roads, which were for the most part in a disgraceful com·lition, they were always bitterly resented and riots were frequently caused by attempts to re- move thon by force. The sole one now in existence in London lick between Dulwich Collogo and Sydenham Hill; but it is not shaintained for the revenue it brings in. On the contrary, the governors of Dulwich Collega wish to retain as far as possible the countrified surroundings of their institu- tion and to divert to other highways the stream of vehioulay tratile which would otherwise spoil their comparativo seclusion. Of cours2, toll gate charges on bridges have been abolished some years, and the

idea of 29-imposing tax upon users of Westminster or other great bridges seems quite without the renim of possibility to the thousands of folk who accept their con venience as they accept other good things inseparable from a great city as their in- disputablo right.
