August, silver was marked three shillings to the tael in the daily market report, 1800 silver was 4/7. it lost one third of its gold value in six years. In 1895 Chins absorbed 28 million tuels of silver and in 1897 twenty-six millions In 1898 the silver mexican ceased falling in copper cash value. It fell to 340 and stopped there. Seven years have passed and it is now rated as 901 or 900. The effect on the copper cash value of the present cheapness of silver is very slight, copper cash when newly issued from a mint to Chinese, purchasers are we are told by Straits Settlements. The risk of at discovery is not great enough to act as a deterrent from this law-breaking operation. melting the coin of the realm is said to bo The profit made outside of the mint-by no more than this, but in the mint itself the gain made by coining is fifteen to twenty per cent, and it is stated that the 150 TINS PEEK FREANS' FRUTT WAFERS, employés in the mint take this profit and no questions are asked. Of course if new cash made at Canton are exported beyond sea, they do not find their way very far in the interior. They are not seen for in- stance at Pakhoi nor on the coast further than Amoy. This fact rests on the testi mony of coin collectors,

A GREAT ASSORTMENT OF JAPANESE CURIOS,

Copper cash are exported from Shang. hai to Hankow to give to country traders in exchange for wheat, hemp and other goods. In Peking in former years banner inen received three-tenths of their allow- ance in copper cash and seven-tenths in silver, but now it is more convenient to pay them the whole in silver, silver being cheap naturally takes the place of copper cash and this in the future will happen to a larger extent. -Copper cash are sent up from the provinces te Peking in con sequence of a role made some years ago re quiring this to be done. There was an in attention to pay the troops partly in cash. But the braziers melt down so much of this howly arrived copper coin that the purpose of the government cannot be carried out. In the reign of Yungoheng the people wore ordered not to use copper kettles bocause of the increasing dearness of the metal, copper kettles were ordered to be given up to revenue officers. It was not till the middle of the eighteenth century. that white copper came into fashion. The good substantial looking cash of that time may still be met with if looked for in a string of cash but they have become fewer during late years as collectors know, be cause the supply of good copper they con tain constitutes & temptation to the brazia now that this metal is high in price.

MORE DESTRUCTIVE THAN WAR,

Ignorance of the cause and nature of human ailments, and of what best to do when attacked by sickness, is responsible for greater loss of life, and infinitely more prolonged misery, than the most desolating war ever waged. Wars b cak out, rage fiercely, snbside, and there is peace ovco more in the land, but everywhere and always there is a proportion of the people who are sick and siling, who cannot properly sustain their part in the competition of life, and whose time is passed in suffering pain, from which they per- ceive un way of escape except by death.

In all ages the wisest and noblest of mankind have exerted their mental power to the utmost to avert, so far as may be, the suffering and was- tage of humanity, and they have been rewarded by a large measure of success.

The evils we deplore, great as they undoubtedly still are, have been enormously diminished by their efforts. Many modes of treatment formerly in high re- pute have been prove by modern science to be positively detrimental to patients, while remedies bave been discovered of such wonderful efficacy that the eures they work would have been ac- counted miracles in a darker and more supersti- tions age. The foremost place among these dis- case-dispelling life-savers must be given to Mother Seigela Carative Syrup. For thirty-five years that great remedy has been doing its hamane work in all parts of the world. No other medicine is so much esteemed, nor likely to be hile people voluntarily write of it in terins such as those employed by Mr Isauc T. Sibiya, of Engunjini, Sneezewood, P.O., Griqualand East, Cape Colony, who, in a letter dated 10th June, -1903, says: I am convinced that but for other Selgol's Curative Syrup I should not be alive to- day. Some years ago I had a bad fall from my horse, and sustained a great shock. I lay for a long time on the ground helpless, and whom ass- istance arrived it was found that I had severely sprained my spino. After a while 1 recovered somewhat, and was not greatly troubled by my Locident until after. I entered upon my present duties as Forest Guard for this district. The work at that time was very hard, the people bo ing unruly and giving much trouble. I had to
