MOSQUITOES IN ENGLAND.

It is much to be feared (says the Standard) that the mosquito has come to stay. For several years past complaints have been made that its shrill trumpet no has been heard and its irritating puncture felt in the vicinity of London, especially in the Valley of the Lea; but now the sufferers there

more than numerous, and oven Kensingtou, Croydon, and Hampstead, though far away from marshy ground, are no longer free. Like the poor, the mosquito has long been with

For two or three years in succession

it pestered guests at the Grosvenor Hotel not very long after it had been opened, but, after the plague had been traced to some tanks at the top of the building, it was promptly suppressed. We can hardly attribute its increase to the present weather, because it has been thriving through acouple of dry Summers, though possibly the rather wet Spring may have favoured the develop. ment of the larva. If the insect does be- come more common we have no right to be greatly surprised, though it is generally associated with Tropical countries. In them no doubt mosquitoes flourish exceed- ingly, and in both hemispheres, Bates, in his noted 'Voyage on the Amazon,' says

holm, where we shall find it ready for us under the old oak trees. The blood- suckers increase as tre go Northward- plentiful in Norway, swa ming in Finland, maddening in Lapland. In the extreme North they are credited with the power of piercing the human skin through the stitch-holes of leather gloves or oven of boots. There is a river East of the North

Cape of which it has been said that, though abounding in salmon, it remained unfished.

More than once a party had made the attempt, but had been quickly driven away by the mosquitoes. In Greenland,

they can be even worse, for there, Nanson declares, they settle in such numbers on the hands as to look like

fur gloves. It not, however, every gust-for the wosquitoes are but certain

kinds of gnats-that bifes. The ordinary offender in this and the harmless little one dancing up and down in clouds on a Sum-

mer evening belong to the saino genus. Nor are all indivīduals, even of an aggres-

sive species, guilty. The rule chercher la femme holds good with mosquitoes; the

male is quite liarmless. Fortunately, though members of the genus Culex have been accused of transmitting a certain de- trimental parasite, we are free from those species of Anopheles which have been proved to propagate malaria. Still, if Britain should become mosquito-haunted, like Norway, it would seriously interfere with the amenities of such Summer life as we are allowed to enjoy in this climate. We should have to devise a definite plan of campaign, for the mosquito is specially open to attack at one stage of its develop ment, when the larva, which lives in shel- low ponds, comes for a time to the surface.

BUILDING THE BIGGEST SHIP. THE CHINA LIGHT

Both the Cedric _and_the Celtic of the White Star line are to lose the distinction of being the largest ships in the world. The Hamburg-American line is to build a now steamer that is to eclipse either of these boats not only as to size, but also as to pood and improvements. Although the Cedric and Celtic are alike us to mea- surements, the first named, because of an extra house built forward, is 98 tons bigger than her older sister, the tonnage of the Cedric being 21,000. Each ship is 700 feet. long, 75 feet wide and 49 1-3 feet dop.

The now Hamburg-American liner is to be 725 feet long, 77 feet in beam and 50 fect in depth, which will make her tonnage something like 25,000. Emil L. Boas, the American agent of the line, has been cabled for by the home office to proceed to Germany in connection with the plans of the new giant.

The new Hamburg boat will have a mean speed of 171⁄2 knots, which will probably result in 18 or more knots on builder's trial.

Aside from speed and size, the new Hamburg liner will be inordinately big as to carrying capacity, particularly as to passengers. She will be able to carry one time again as many guests as the Waldorf- Astoria can accommodate. If four com plete regiments of infantry were placed on board of her there would still be room for

a few hundred more persons without any overcrowding.

The chiof cabin accommodation will be amidships and the cabins will be built up there much after the fashion of a modern apartment house. The minor details have not yet been agreed upon, but it is under- stood that the new ship will have at least three and possibly four funnels, each cap- able of letting two trains pass in safety, and two masts.

The United Service Gazell says: Wo have heard much of late of the advance of Japan. Their physical condition has, how- ever, deteriorated. This is very unmistak ably shown by the recruiting returns, and by the reports of the medical officers entrusted with the examination of the re- cruits. Year by year the doctors state the conscripts who present themselves before! the oxamining boards are of ever increasing THE Splendid new Steel Twin Screw feebler constitution. For instanco, during the last ten years the average weight of the recruits has decreased by about five pounds, and, this, in view of the fact that the Japan ese are naturally a small and light people, is a very serious diminution. One of the

most eminent Japanese surgeons has, in fact, declared that in his opinion eight or nine of every ten conscripts called are not really in every respect fit for Military service. Last year, 1902, only about 44 per cent could be passed by the doctors. We give the statement as our contemporary has it, though it does not accord with cer- tain other statements we have soon.
