A meeting of working men, held at Bir- mingham yesterday, heartily supported the policy of preferential trade enunciated by Mr. Chamberlain, on the round that such a policy was intended to draw closer the bonds of union between the motherland and all parts of the Empire.

The belief was expressed by the meeting that these great advantages could be ob tained without unduly interfering with foreign commerce, or increasing the total

cost of food.

Children when Teething

HAVE more or less diarrhoes, which

cannot be checked effectually, as the cause cannot be removed; but the diarrhoea can and should be controlled by giving Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy, and an occasional dose of castor oil to -cleanse the system.

During the summer months children are subject to disorders of the bowels and should receive the most careful attention. As soon as any looseness of the bowels is noticed, Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoes Remedy should be given. Get a bottle to-day; it may save a life. DIET IN THE TROPICS.

In the course of a series of articles on Tropical Hygiene Professor Simpson says:--

The defect likely to be in the diet of a European in the Tropics is that it is too nitrogenous and fatty, The European has been accustomed to animal food, which mainly consists of nitrogenous substances and fata, and there is a tendency to continue these in the same proportions as before. Too much meat is taken, which places a strain on the excretory organs, and causes disorder of the digestive functions. The liver and kidneys become congested; for- mentation, catarrhs and dyspepsia are sot up, accompanied by fever and a certain amount of full-bloodeduess which predis. poses to sunstroke. Such unhealthy con- ditions should be rectified by a reduction in the amount of animal food and a moro liberal allowance of vegetable food, which Aupplies the necessary constituents in a less stimulating form more suited to a climate in which congestion of the abdominal vis-

cera is especially apt to occur.

In the tropics, where the temperaturu is nearly as high and some times higher than that of the bodily tomper ture, there is not the same necessity for fatty foods as in coller climates, and the substitution of -frait and farinaceous substances for oleaginous articles will not only be more grateful to the taste but will prevent intestinal disorders which, under the circumstances, are likely to be produced by a diet which is too fatty. It would be a to exclude meat al- mistake, however, together from the diet, and in the case of special hard work outdoors meat may bo increased in the diet with advantage.

All carbohydrates are converted into glucose before absorption, and in this form are more readily metabolised than fats or albuminates. Owing to the case with which they are oxidised the carbon is easily liberated for the purposes of energy, and with loss production of internal heat. For this reason they are a most valuable factor for the production of energy in the Tropics, as they impose less labour on the organs of digestion. The cereals indigenous in the Tropies, such as maize, rice and the native lentil, are preferable, as they contain less aitrogen,

When energy is to be liberated rapidly with the least tax upon the digestive system, augar, an almost pure, suluble carbohy... drate, is an excellent food for the pupose. In the Philippines the cavalry horses imported from America became emaciated and refused to eat, until it was discovered that molassess or sweetened water sprink- led on the coarse grass or hay made it fat palatable. When thus fed they grew and sleek.

Among the troops engaged at Porto Rico and the Philippines, whose appetites had become impaired, there was a craving for candies and sweets, which was relieved by a supply of these articles. Experiments have shown that the fatigue of cyclists on long record-breaking trials has more quick- ly been relieved by sugar than by other foods.

Fatal Geyser Eruption.

An exceptionally severe eruption of the Waimanga Geyser, Rotorua, New Zea- land, on August 30 overwhelmed a party of four including two ladies. Their bodies were recovered nearly a mile away, and were so torn and scarred as to point to a swift though terrible death,

The victims

wore :---Miss Nicholls, North Canterbury. Miss Nicholls, North Canterbury. Mr M'Naughton, Ponsonby. Joe Warbrick, guide, Most people interested in football in England will remember Joe Warbrick. It was hy who organised and captained the new Zealand football team which visited England in 1889.

Accordingly when the morning men came bf the road at two o'clock, there were no

ickahas to take their place. Sivals came along the street, they were met y pickets and informed that a strike was

, and advised to join the strikers. In most casen the coolies fell in with the shes of the majority, but in otbers a little pesuasion and intimidation was needed to eure co-operation.. At the corner of Paguilar Street and Queen's Road two ticshas were going along when a couple of picats stopped them and tried to provent he from plying their vehicles for hire. Paeof the two immediately turned his icksa off the road, but the other raised bjections, but ultimately followed his prat- ter's sad, and pulled off. A similar thing court in many other parts of the city nd ths the whole of the pullers were at ength aduced to join the strikers.

On the police being informed that a trike ws on they sent for the head men ud had them up at the police station, here the causes lending up to the strike ere invatigated. Finding the men were bstinate, the officials allowed them three burs in which to start, and threatened at if rickshas were not rupping then, -sterner methods would have to be resorted

to.

The rickshas did not resume work again however, until close on nine o'clock at night, having been out of use for about seven hours.

In determining to strike the coolies ex- hibited an amount of couning in choosing the day of the week when vehicles are On Saturday after- greatest in demand, noons people like to fly at of the fetid air of the city to Happy Valley and similar places, and those who have been in the habit of taking week-end rides must have been greatly disappointed and incon- venienced when they found the streets cleared. Those persons who wished to go to the polo match and out to play golf were also robbed of their pleasure if they had to depend un the coolie to pull them to the scenes of the sport. In many cases persons hired bicycles, and before nightfall there was a varied assortment about the roadways. The Chinese took to the gharries when they could get them, and there being such a demand everyone who owned a box with wheels on it dragged it out from the oblivion into which it had been long relegated to earn a few honest cash. The chair coolies also reaped a harvest, having more than they could do to accommodate the many who wanted their services. Stray rickshas began to appear in the streets about eight o'clock, and later in the evening the majority were back praying for the fares that they had refused to carry earlier in the day.

St. Andrew's Day 1902 was celebrated by a Ball held in the City Hall, which both socially and financially, was success.

The Hon. R. Shewan, your Vice-Chair- man, and Mr William Kidd resigned their places on the Committee on their departure from the Colony. During the year, the Hon. C. W. Dickson joined the Committee, Mr David Wood, the Hon. Secretary, and Mr Andrew Forbes, the Hon. Treasurer, both left the Colony last spring on holiday leave, and were replaced respectively by Mr. N. S. Brown and Mr J. Stodart, to both of whom the thanks of members are duc.

THERAPION NO. 1

in a remarkably short time, often a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, superseding injectious, the use of which does irre- parable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious diseases,

THERAPION NË 2

This pre- paration purifies the whole system through the blood, and thoroughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.
