по

In a piping breeze-the weather he wanted—and under as clear a sky as mari-

ners at Sandy Hook have ever known, Sir Thomas Lapton saw his third: Shamrock out-manœuvred and out-sailed in the first completed race this year of the interns tional serios. Not since the coveted trophy was won, fifty-two years ago to-day, by the Yanken aohooner whose victory was so de- cisive that to the inquiring British-monarch it was announced, Madame, there is no second,' has there been a contest which for its closeness and for the suspense in which it held the thousands who went

went down to

see it, compared with the desperate two- hour thresh to windward to-day of the Reliance and Shamrock III.

the incomparable seamanship of less than the unequalled lines of the Reliance was duo the victory o the Yankee defender.: Getting his boat over the starting line well to windward and on practically equal terms with the Britisher Barr kopt his craft in the windward berth throughout, forcing Captain Wringe at w critical stare to make two otherwise un necessary tacks to escape from under his rival's lee. The sailing of the Shamrock skipper was practically flawless. The ad vantage which he lost before the race was fairly begun was costly and he paid the price. That was the story of the day.

"The skippers jockeyed picturesquely for the start. Never did yachts look more beautiful than in the rollicking, tumbling goa, with the brilliant sua on their white and creamy sails, painting wonderful effects in the high lights and shadows which melt- ed into each other constantly. The first leg of a race probably never was watched more closely. To begin with it was impossible to determine how near to- gether wore the racers, because early in the contest they split tacks, and it was a guess whether they were minutes or a mile apart." The uncertainty, coupled with the beauty of the day itself, kept up the interest until the outer mark was reached.

And then it became keen, for this would afford the first real comparison. There was sadness when it became apparent that the Beliance was a long way ahead, for that settled the race and it could not be

IMPURITIES IN THE BLOOD. We have seen hosts of letters from people who have received great benefit from the use of Clarke's Blood Mixture. It cannot be too highly estimated, for it cleanses and clears the bigot from all im parities. This is a good testimonial from the Family Doctor, which goes on farther to say: It is the finest Blood Purifier that science and skill have brought to light, and we can with the atmost confidence recommend it to our subaori- bera and the public generally. For Scrofula, Bourvy, Eczema, Bad Legs, Skin and Blood Diseases, Pimples and Sores of all kinds, its effects are marvellous. Thousands of wonderful eures have been affected by it. 'As the clean-limbed racers got further out the weight of the wind steadily in- creased and the waves began to spill froth from their green crests. Both boats, with every stitch of canvas sot, smashed into the Beas, heeling down in the puffs under the press of thousan a of yards of light canvas until their lee rails were awash in the foam- ing brine. Their crews, piled up on the weather & de, were repeatedly deluged with the showers of spray sent aloft by their

shark-like bows.

Slowly but surely the thousands aboard the observation fleet saw that Reliance was gaining-opening a wider stretch of water between her and the challenger. -

A COOLIE'S DISGUSTING AOT. To the Editor of the CHINA MAIL"

CANTON, September 24,

SIR,-I beg to draw your attention to a shocking experience which bofel a lady in the principal street of Hongkong a few days ago. She was sitting in a rickshs with a child upon her knees, and whilst the vehicle was being drawn slowly through the crowd, so as to avoid hurting anyone, coolie stepped up and deliberately spat in strau or in her face. As the lady is a Hongkong, and, in fact, very seldom visi B the city, it is impossible to attribute the coolie's disgusting act to any spirit of re- venge. There must surely be something wrong in Hongkong when the Chinoso be como so bold as they have been of lato. It is bad enough when they r b, but when they commence to adopt filthy practices and molest unknown ladies in the main streets things are assuming an aspect that is worthy of the most serious consideration on tha part of the Administrators of the Colony,

THE ADMIRALTY DOCK AT

HONGKONG.

The following is the letter sont by Mr R. Shewan to the Times last month :--

Will not some member of the House of Commons put the following questions to the First Lord of the Admiralty ?

1. Do the Admiralty object to the request of the residents of Hongkong, contained in polition to the Secretary of State for the tulonies, dated Hongkong, April 4, that a Royal Commission be appointed to considor the question of the change of site for the now Admiralty dock ?

2. Is it true that the original borings taken by Admiralty officials out here have proved incorrect and misleading?

3. Is it true that, in consequence of the nature of the ground having proved very different from what was expected, the time and cost of construction will exceed the original estimates ?

4. If so, what is the estimated extra time and cost?

THREE YEARS AFTER.

A Visit to Peking (Special to the China Mail.') We were nearly over the Taku Bar, and I was anxious to got an early look at the forts I had heard so much about. Near me stood a holiday making officer of the U.S. Army, who had accompanied the Relief Expedition in 1900. I had made his acquaintance on the way up by the sim. ple expedient of asking him if he spoke Eng ish, and, receiving his assurance that he did, had found him a most entertaining companion.

"What about those forte ?" I asked as we began to make out the entrance to the Tientsin River.

There they are," he said, pointing to some irregular mounds of mud and bricks on either bank of the river; “What's left of them,"

"I see one of them has the Japanese flag 5. Is it not true that the early comple-stuck in it," I said. "And, by Jove, tion of the work is not essential. as there there's actually a Japaneso sentry guard is already a large dock at Hongkong, ing it."

6. In view of there boing no danger from delay, will the Admiralty explain their reasons for refusing the request of the petitioners?

Chine, her people and the mandarinate, has so unuch to account for that it seems a pity to bring a railing accusat on unless where, the evidence is clear that outrages on for eigners are the result of negligence or of actual participation of the officials. No one has yet suggested that it was so in the case of Mr Homeyer. Now, if it could be shown that Chinese subjects, or even mandarins themselves, were free from attacks of rob ber, and that foreigners' had a inonopoly of this kind of treatment, then the matter would appear in a very different light, The facts are all the other way. Missionaries, men and women, and even young girls scarcely out of their teens, inve moved about with perfect freedom in South China, and the times they have bean molested or tracked, either by the people or robbers, are rare indeed ompared with what might often have been expected in troublous times, 'Thore is nothing to prove that the attack on Mr Hemeyer represented hatred or opposition n the part of the populace, and so far rom there being any collusion on the part of the military mandarin in whoso urisdiction the outrage took place, there is baulute proof of his sincora regret, as seen

The speed of the train to Tientsin did not quite take our breath away, but for all that we had a pleasant and comfortable journey through a green and smiling country-a country that struck me as being well worth fighting for. In fact, the large grass plains on either side of the track, the trees on the distant horizon, and the the stunted willows bordering the ditches, river winding painfully for ten miles to get to a place four miles away all these reminded me, not indistinctly, of the rail way journeys I have at times undertaken through the counties that form the valley

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given helow has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office

n London from the result of the analysis

of observations taken by means of an au. tomatic tide-recording machine in the WA- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
