ments in the provision of imperial suites, with all the conveniences and the isolation of kingly palace, the feature of the accom- modation generally is the providing of ordi. nary first and secondclass passenger cabins of satisfactory area, and in the minimum of deck space.
A novel feature, too, is the complete isolation-even from the third- class passenger-of the crow and the officers. The decoration of the ship affords opportunities for original and individual effort. Twenty years ago panelling with polished fancy woods was the rogue, varied with white panelling picked out with gold and other lining. Then came the carving machine, and for a time we had wood-carving in a profusion which did not compensate for its montonous similarity and regularity. We had also the era of lincrusta; but later on a more artistic effect was reached in the best of our ships, owing to the engage ment of decorative painters; and the result

Thus a writer in the N.-C. rule, certainly observe it in every branch
of life. In a crowded tramcar, -railway car- riage, ur street, a white man receives far more consideration than he would from his own kind at home, and the same politeness with which the Japanese treat each other
is extended to him. He certainly does not receive any sort of homage, and is at once mado to understand that he is one of the many on the same level; and if he is a ren- sonable man he will accept the position- otherwise there will be trouble. One mem ber of a party of us in Tokio would not forget that he was not in China, and he was He will, very soon a most unluppy man. in the future I suppose, form one of the party of adverse critics of the ways of the Japanese. His paths fell in pleasant. places but he expected to occupy too much room in them. Aggressive conduct and wrong assumption of superiority had better be left behind before Japan is visited. It is far more profitable to show ordinary respect to the people, and by your behaviour inspire them to a worthy emulation of your character, than to let them think that the only things foreign worth having are of a material nature.

One of the most intelligent people ever interviewed in connection with a cure by Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People (which have proved a blessing to thousands of sufferers from Indigestion) is Mr John Rush, an agricultural labourer who lives at South Lopham, England. His cure excit- ed something like a sensation locally, for he had long been a martyr, and his intelligence made him highly respected. He was actually interviewed on the subject by the

KOWLOON GAS SUPPLY.
To the Editor of the CHINA MAIL.'
KOWLOON, Sept. 10, 1903. DEAR SIR, I would like, through the medium of your valuable paper, to call the attention of those responsible, to the poor supply of gas which we, in Kowloon, are at present being supplied with. For the past five or six nights it has been impossible for one to see to read or write. In fact, in several of the houses, the inmates have had to revert to the penny candle. Such a state of affairs is scandalous, when one
itself.
He also visited Yong am-pho, and then proceeded to Pingyang, from which place ho journeyed by boat on the Taidon River to Chemulpo, leaving there for Japan and arriving at Shimonoseki on August 26. So it will be seen that Captain Kusuyama has made a fairly complete tour of the country, The following is an account of his travels in Manchuria, as published by a vernacular contemporary, says the Kobe Chronicle.
'I feel that I attracted less attention at
the hands of the Russian authorities dur- fairlying my travels in Manchuria than I should have been led to suppose. This was pro- bably due to the fact that I wore ordinary clothes, though, whenever questioned as to my personal status, I did not conceal the fact that I was a military officer. It was reported that troops were stationed at every station on the railways in Manchuria, but this is a little exaggerated, as some of No troops were seen at the the stations certainly were cot guarded by troops. stations of Whang-tien, Kuenin, and Hing- kin.'
Campbell, at back, with his good reputa. tion of last year, will probably be available again.
A team chosen from the above-mentioned players would scem a strong combination, and if all turn out regularly the prospects of Ruggerites are indeed bright. With more members than usual playing, it is hoped that the Club will cater more for the A Team than it did last year. The service teams are as usual quite an unknown quantity until they are met.
With new arrivals on this station, the Navy should be every bit as strong as last Amongst others who have gone home are Tweedie and Pringle.
