esteemed friends the P. & O. Company, and it would therefore be most ungracious

with the name of Mr Kendall (Loud cheers.)

Mr Kendall, who was received with hearty cheering, said: Without exception, the Moldavia was the finest ship ho had evor. seen or ever been on board of, and she was also the largest and finest ship the P. &0. Company possessed. She had been built up-to-date in every way to meet the re- quirements of their traffic. He might also add that they were spending about one-and- a-half millions of money in the production of ships up-to-date, apart altogether from ships to be purely employed for cargo purposes. The company wished to be in a position to undertake any duties that might be imposed by the present or future Gov- ernments in regard to the mail service. They heard all sorts of stories from this quarter and another quarter-that the Bagdad Railway was taking letters from India to London in something like half the time that the P. & O. Company had hither. to done. They knew that a railway had been carried across Siberia, but he had not yet found that this railway delivered letters in London in a considerably shorter space of time than the P. & O.

cortain amount of elasticity which would enable the company, should the Government entrust them with the con- tract, to save a little time. Whether they should do so or not, he thought the time was far distant when the British mails would be entrusted to a foreign railway for transmission between the mother country and their Indian possessions, or the Far East. (Applause.) With regard to Aus tralia, they knew that the man in the street or thought it was an easy thing to run ships

SLAVE GIRLS IN CHINA,

Of the number of slave girls in China thore do no definite idea, but the number is decid- edly decreasing with the advance of civiliza- tion and the changes of the times, says a writer in the Shanghai Mercury. The orig in of slave girls dates far back before the Manchu conquest, as may be seen from an- cient histories.and story-books, and it may Have boen brought about either by the temp- station to gain money or as captives of war. Among the slave girls there are several kinds, the worst kinda being sometimes re- quired to perform very mean offices and to

It is not a rare case that they are kindly and generously treat- ed, and when growing up, good and proper husbands are chosen for them, so that they may enjoy the blessings of life, and take their proper places as virtuous women Sometimes, when serving rich families, money and other valuables are given them for their marriages by their mistresses as a token of love and appreciation. The keeping of slave girls has grown into a trade. They are to be found in all parts of China, especially in the southern pro- vinces where many are bought and sold from time to time by people of disreputable character, and whose sole aim is to make money. These are turned into immoral girls, sometimes with their own will, hut

more often by compulsion Once,

18 it was told, a young slave-girl under distressful condition of life, wept bitterly for days and nights over the new miserable life she had to enter upon. Oh! it would be a very good thing to help such girls, and, happily such a society by foreigners has been organized. Throw out the life-line, let the motto over be.

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au-

tomatic tido-recording machine in the Wa

ter Police Basin at Taim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lemont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
