Newly-built STEAMBOAT,

OF LORD CURZON.

Surely that story about the Maharajah of Benares' suite of ivory furniture, told in the Daily News by Mrs. Smeaton cannot be true, says the Investor's Review. We do not cast the slightest doubt on that lady's veracity, but cannot bring the mind to believe that Lord Curzon of Kedlestone, Viceroy of India, the representative of England'a honour, would have descended to such a depth of meanness as she des. cribes. There must be some other ex- planation. The official story is that his lordship offered to buy the suite, and that

'His Divan (Minister), who received me, apolo- gised for the bareness of the state room, explaining that the fine old suite of carved ivory furniture, presented to an ancestor of the present Maharajah, as reward for ser- vices to the British Government, had been taken by the Viceroy, who had intimated his desire to possess it. This, to a native

gentleman, is equivalent to a command, so the Maharajah received in exchange' a | rifle (which a well-known sportsman in the district valued at about thirty guineas), and sent his heirloom, at his own expense, to Calcutta. Mrs Smeaton adds that she sub. scquently saw part of this precious heirloom which the Maharajah was most reluctant to part with, under repair in the School of Art, Calcutta, and Mr Haxell, the superintendent, declares the exquisite painted engravings to be unique, and though said to have cost originally £1,000, to be now practically priceless.' This is the furniture valued by Lord George Hamilton's expert at £100. The gorge rises in loathing at such a story, and if the Home Government does not insist upon the return of the suite to the Maharajah 7- forthwith, it will be art and part in what

FISH EATERS AND LEPROSY. THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER

COMPANY, LIMITED.

ELECTRIC LIGHT PLANTS NOW IN OPERATION IN CANTON AND

An interesting discussion took place at the British Medical Congress sitting at Swansea on July 21, on “Leprosy, its Cauno and Treatment.' The subject was in- troduced by Mr J. Hutchinson of London, who advanced the proposition that an over- whelming body of evidence was opposed to the belief that leprosy spread by any ordinary mode of contagion such as by contact, clothes, bites of insects or wounds; 1814 that hereditary transmission, if ever it occurred, was rare; that communication through eating food contaminated by the lepers' hands occurred occasionally but was by no means frequent; that the facts pointed to leprosy being caused by some

article of food; that there was no food

which could be reasonably suspected excep- ting fish, and that the very excessive prevalence of leprosy in certain fishing districts was a fact strongly in favour of the fish hypothesis; its excessive incidence in Roman Catholic countries supported this conclusion.

Dr. Marquis Fernando, Colombo, op posed the views of Mr Hutchinson, and said that his experience in Ceylon led him to believe that there could be no doubt

that leprosy was contagious.

Sir Patrick Manson (London) conferred ho was not one of Mr Hutchinson's dia. ciples. He wished Mr Hutchinson had dealt with the subject from the pathological point of view, and had explained how the bacillus got into bad fish. If it were intro- duced into bad fish, why should it not be introduced into fresh fish? It might be supposed that it existed in fish before the fish became rotten. Leprosy and tuber- culosis were similar diseases. The loprosy bacillus was not inoculable, and the tubercle bacillus was inoculable with great difficulty. The incubation period of both diseases was A great one, and there were a hundred points to show that leprosy and tuberculosis Fish W08 un- were similar disonsca. doubtedly associated with leprosy, but only in a very indirect way.

A Prolific Family.

One hundred and forty-six of the 205 direct descendants of the Dowager Duchess of Abercorn mot on July 8 at Montagu House, Whitehall, to celebrate her 91st birthday. Few men or women have lived to see their grandchild's grandchild, but that is the privilege of the venerable Duchess, who received the congratulations of four generations-children, grandchild- ren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchild. The Dowager Duchess of Abercorn has had 14 children, of whom 10 survive--namely, the present Duke of Abercorn, Lords Claud, George, Frederic, and Ernest Hamilton, Harriet, Countess of Lichfield, the Duchess of Buccleuch, the Countess of Winterton, Albertha, Duchess of Marlborough, and the Marchioness of Lansdownc. Among the survivors of her 65 grandchildren are the Duke of Marl- borough, the Duchess of Leeds, the Marchioness of Waterford, the Earl of Lichfield, the Earl of Durham, the Coun- tesses of Pembroke and Wicklow, the Mar- quess of Hamilton, M.P., Lady Eleanor Cecil, the Earl of Dalkeith, Viscount Val- letort, Lady Algernon Percy, Lady Edith St.
