· A TYPICAL CASE."
1
A correspondent sends the Bangkok Times the following which he describes as a typical case' in the Siamese Courts. Ho says that it is vory illus rative of the methods of reasoning ́adopted. To that
we might add that the tale bas hitherto had a much wider application, and in fact still
has.
JUDGMENT OF THE ORIG NAL COURT.
The question is-how many apples did Adam and Eve eat between them in the garden of Elon? The plaintiff's lawyer has urged that Eve 8 and Adam 8 makinga total of 16, but the gentleman who holds the defendant's power of attorney says that Evo 8, and Adam 2, making the total 10' .. only. The various scientists, mathemati- cians, and other exports who have been called are inclined, so far as we can recon- aile their opinions, to the theory that Eve and Adam 82, making the total 9% But the parties and the lawyers and the scienti fic witnesses have all overlooked one impor tant fact, which the Court considers the cua of the whole case, viz:-that the antediluvians were a raco of giants. Eve therefore probably 81 and Adam 82, making a total of 163.
We therefore give judg- ment for that number.

PUBLIC AUCTION.
Particulars and Conditions of the Letting by Public Auction Sale, to be held
The European legal adviser to the Court |dissented, and gave another written jùdg. ment of some length, his conclusion being that if Eve 81 and Adam 812 the total way 893. Both parties appealed.
JUDGMENT OF APPEAL COURTĄ This is a question which does not present any difficulty if looked at in the proper light. The Plaintiff's Inwyer's contention that the total is 16 is absurd, and the de- fendant's attorney's assumption that it is only 10 equally so. The fact of the antedi- lavians having been a race of giants has nothing to do with the case. Thus the Court below was misled. We reject the totale of 10, 16, 00, 163, and 893. Clearly the solution is this-Evo 814 Adam, aud Adam 8124 Eve, total 8,938 for which number we give judgment. Both parties appealed.
[Mem. The Court of Appeal consists of trained judges and there is therefore po European legal adviser.]
A
JUDGEMENT OF THE SAN DIKA. We have considered it beneath our dig- nity as the highest Court of Appeal in the land to enter into or consider the conclu sions come to by the inferior Courts or their reasons for these conclusions. It is clear upon the record that Eva 814 Adam; but it is also clear that Adam 81242 oblige Eve; the total therefore is 82,056 · for which we give judgment.
[The San Dika was in labour with this judgment for 12 months before it was de- livered.]
Mining in the Straits Settlements.
The mino-owners and those interested in the tin-mining industry in the Temoh and Chenderiang districts will, says the Straits Echo, be interested to hear that the produce and output of that metal have increased considerably during the last two months. This is the case especially with the Yuen- Lee Kongsi which is owned and managed- by Mr Chun Yik Theuc. This Towkay acquired about sixty acres some time lash : year from a former company, which did not pay. After having obtained the per- mission of the Governmont to alter both the public road and the course of the Chenderiang river, which bordered on the claim, and placed, experienced foremen un

in full swing and giving employment to one thousand coolies. A noticeable feature of the mine is the presence of a gang of Kling labourers who are employed · in removing earth from the chutes and manning huge motal trucks which run on rails. It is expected that the output of tin-ore for the month of July will exceed 500 piculs. Mr Claude Leykum, who is also a partner, is the. Secretary of the Kongsi, and his many friends both in Hongkong and the Straits Settlements will- we are sure, congratulate him on his good luck.

A STRANGE EPIDEMIC IN
SIAM.
An official report by Phya Sukhum, High Commissioner of Monthon Nakon Fritamarat, gives an account of a strange epidemic of disease that recently occurred at a place called Sisakrabu in the north of the province of Singora. The High Com-

missioner sent out Princs Charcon (Deputy Capacity,
Commissioner) and Khun Worwit (medical office) to investigate and report. They found that the disease had broken out first among the cattle in the place. Boils form- ed on the foro legs of the animals affected and in a day or two these had spread to the neck and mouth, and then the cattle died. Two Kamuan and three or four other peo-
was
ple ate some of the meat of the dead bul- locks, and five or six days after they began to be affected by the same symptoms. First there
an itching at the wrists and fingers, and in five or six. hours boils formed with white matter inside. These were most painful, and the patients felt as if their hands were burn- ing. In six or seven hours the matter became purple, and when the boils burst black mat-
same
ran out. The boils spread over the body, the arms and body became swollen till the I person could hardly breathe. This continued for two or their days, and then every one who had eaten the diseased meat died, When death came black matter flowed out of all the boils on the body. Some 22 or 23 people had assisted in nursing these unfortunate people, and in two
or three days have they
the too began to symptoms. In none of these cases, how- evor, did the disease go beyond the earlier stages, and all recovered. The High Com- missioner ordered the dead bodies to be buried, not cremated, and the clothing and things in the houses where they had died, to be burned. Instructions wore also given that noats should be allowed to moor in Tront of those houses. The disease has now completely died out.
It is to be hoped that this part of the country will profit by the experience, and be careful to avoid diseased meat in future At the same time it is unfortunato that no one has been able to say definitely what is the nature of the disease.-Bangkok Times.
Imperial Service Medal.
An honours list' of a distinctly novel character appeared on July 3 na a su ple- ment to the London Gazette. It contains about 400 names, and the distinction con- ferred upon those whom the King has been pleased to honour is the Imperial Service Medal, specially instituted by his Majesty in the year of his Coronation as a reward The for long and meritorious service. recipients are retired members of the Civil Service, not belonging to the administra- tive or clerical branches; about a third of them are Post Office employés ; and among the names in the list-which includes both men and women- are those of skilled dock- yard labourers, park superintendents, pri- son warders, gate-keepers, and school- masters, and others with descriptions that few people are likely to have heard before-
a War Oflice forger, for instance (what shall
we hear of the War Office next?), a War Office haminerman, viewer, and trimmer;
established chargeman and an Admiralty
master of
and caulker,' pattern-maker, yarderaft, and single-stationed labourer.
Sugar.
The Paris correspondent of the Times wrote on July 3:-The decision taken by the French Chamber of Deputies to-day to reduce the Excise duty on Sugar in Algeria i from September 1 is a further illustration of the beneficial consequences of the Brus- sels Sugar Convention which are becoming evident in many ways. The establishment by private enterprise of a sugar refinery in Indo-China shows how that measure has turned the energies of those engaged in the sugar industry in a direction which renders it capable of sound and independent de- velopment. The new establishment, of which the Eclair to-day gives some interes- ting particulars, has been founded with a capital of 10,000,000 frs. and has received from the Indo-Chinese colonial administra- tion a monopoly for a period of six years under certain restrictions tending to guard the interests both of the consumers and of the Bug-r-planters. It is calculated that, while the i-ttor will get a much better price r their raw material, the cost of the man- inctured article will be substantially re need.
