SHUSTER.

The following comments' are inade by the Sundry Sun (Manila) on the exclusion from the Philippine Islands of a clerk, who came out from homo to fill a bank appoint- ment: Mr Shuster, Collector of Customs, has decided that one Frank Allon, an employee of the Chartered Bank, has no right to enter these islands, inasmuch as ho coties here under contract for a number of years. With all due respect to Mr Shuster, and without impugning his honesty and ain. cerity of purpose, I am sorry to say that I' consider Mr Shuster quixotic and silly in the extreme. Furthermore he is doing his best, although undoubtedly unintentional.” ly, to injure-the business interests of those islands and create ridicule for us and our

laws in the eyes of foreigners According to the strict letter of the law, Mr Shuster could keep out of these islands threefourths of the people who come here to accept posi tions. He might have kept out the thous and or less school teachers who came here under contract to serve the government for two years unless otherwise released from their agreement. He might, following out the logical course of his argument, ex- clude from these islands every American soldier who is brought here under con- tract, signed and sworn, to give his. services and his life if needs be, to the American government at any time during a period of three years. He might, also, turn back to America, all young women (God bless 'em) who come to the Philip- pines under either oral or written agree ment to love, honour and obey, for all time Carthly, the Insular American who has sent for them. He might-but what is the use (Praya of specifying?

The hardships of the campaign are very great.

A column leaving Bohotle on July 3rd arrived at Shirkh on July 12th, taking nine-and-a-half days to cover 150 miles, and dropping 400 dead camels on the track.

The number of invalids is very great; and is a pity that en irely new troops can- not replace the old troops at the beginning of the new time,

portant nid to other treatment.

But what should that ther treatment be?

No question was over more derate, or is still farther from settlement. We will not attempt to answer it, but allow Mr Charles Rodgers, of Erst Loudon, to give a brief account of two illucske8 from whier lie lias enffered, which throws con- siderable light up the matter.

Writing on Febrery 9th, 198, Mr Bodgers obseries: — ⚫ I feel it my duty to bring to public notice the benefit-I have received by using Moth- er Seigel's 1 urative Symp. Five years ago I was stricken down with rhentontie fever, and was at- ten ed by three different docters; but their united efforts did me little or no good, and my condition was for a long time very precarious, It was then that a friend advised me to try Sei- gel's Syrop, and I revolved to accept his advice. I was delighted to find myself very soon able to walk about as usual, and after taking only three botties of the medicine I was capable of resum. ing my business.

In July, 1900, I experienced another and a more serious trouble. It was found hat I was suffering from a very weak chest. A doctor whom I consulted told me plainly that he feared I was -cousumptive, and ordered me to come to South, was far Afrien. I entertained no doubt that I gone in cousump in, having all the signs of that diso se, but especially an extremely weak chest and an everpresent feeling of weakness and angoor

Without being advised to do so, but with the recollec ion of the goo that it had done me two years before in curing me of another complaint, I hind the happy insp ration to try Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup. The result exceeded my most sanguino expectations and it was not long before I was as strong and healthy as any man could wish to be. I strongly recommend the use of that med cine to ab who suffer as I did, and for the sake of humanity would 1 ke my case to be known far and wide.

Promise and priormance are not quite the same thing, as may have discovered to their cost; but dhe pample who have built high hopes upon that from which Mr Rodgers received so much benefit were never yet known to be disappointed.
