Botha complained that the English criti- cisms of his speeches were unjust. The ideal of the Boors was to sec South Africa one great white nation, all pulling together. The D utrche Tageszeitung says that the correspondence is extremely awkward, as it shows that Germany abandoned retalia. tion against. Can dn by practically asking Great Britain to close.the discussion.

July 18.-Horr Richter suggests that Germany should conclude special commer cial trentie, with the British colonies which grant Great Britain reterence."

German newspapers emphasise the neces sity for keeping Great Britain out of the fiscal quarr 1 by continuing favored-nation treatment, in order to induce Great Britain to allow Germany to fight the colonies single handed, since the colonies would not be able to adhere to preference principles if Great Britain did not make their quarrel hers.

Mr C. T. Ritchie, Chancellor of the Ex chequer, speaking yesterday at a dinner at the Mansion House,. to an assembly of merchants and bankers, said that a debt of

· £160,000,0 0 remained over in convection with the war in Sou-b-Africa..

He hoped, however, that the debt would bo axtinguished within 12 years by the oparation of a sinking fund.

The country, dded Mr Ritchie, was was evidenced by the fact prosperous, as that British Consols were the world's pre- eminent security.

The Chancellor added significantly that it rested with those urging a fiscal change to show it was no essary or desirable.

Sir William Verton Harcourt, commen- ting on the report of the Tariff Roform League, ree mmending the shelving of pro- ferential in favour of retaliatory duties, writes :-

The former is an ugly topic, but retalia-. tion in required against the colonies as against foreion nations. If Mr Chamber- lain scratches' preferential duties as a means to win with retaliation, what will his colonial hackers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Edmund Barton, saya?'

What we desire to point qut on the present occasion, however, is that it is not only in severe and fatal diseases that the pills are so valuable, but also in the ailments of daily life; as rheumatisin, anumia, St. Vitus' dance, fits, and disorders which trouble women.

As a tonic and a cure for any form of weakness or debility the pills have a high Mrs. Godfrey, 50 Princes' reputation. stree, Mile-endā, Purtsmouth, England said to a Portsmouth Times reporter:

Two years ago; I became very low- d depressed, owing to a work spirited heart. I had sick headaches and was un. able to do any work. This continued for about six months, and I kept on taking the medicine given to me, but I only became weaker and weaker and perfectly helpless. My husband had to carry me upstairs to bed every night, I seemed to have no life or energy and would sit moping by the fire all day. About eighteen months ago I was recommenced by a friend to try Dr. Willi- ams' pink pills for pale people. I had no sooner ommended to tak them than I found relief, and by the time I had finished the first box I was much better. The pal- pitation of the heart and the pains in the head had ceased, and I grow perceptibly stronger. I was encouraged to keep on,' added Mr. Godfrey, and six or seven boxes completely cured me.'
