seventy-six millions, and the 827,000 square miles had expanded to over three million square miles But it is not so much with the increase of people and· territory that Mr Lawson is concerned ag with the ext aordinary growth of wealth and productive power, and here he calls to his aid a wide array of incontrovertible statistics All the industrial problema now agitating the United States revolve around the mammoth trader under one nanie or another-trust, syndicate, combine, or -controlling company. There is hardly an industry left of any importanco which is open to the man of moderate means.
All dominated, more or less, by the millionaire and his agents. Every American manufacture which is abreast of the times is at the mercy of a few vast establishments which lord it over competitors and customers alike. The pages show, by direct appeal to stat- istics, that the milliouaire spirit is insinua- ting itself into banks, railways, shipping companies, iron works, and even into retail

stores.
>
The very farmers have caught the craze, and are now projecting fifty-million- dollar syndicates to finance their crops. The outcome of all this is not merely economic; the influence is felt over the whole Republic. It flows not only into every branch of business, but is gaining ascendancy in political and social life. The economic problem, in its broadest
form, is stated when it is remembered that there are 76,500,000 people on the one side and 5,860,000,060 dollars' worth of annual pro- duction on the other.
If the present growth of population and wealth continue, before the year 1926 there will be 153,000,000 people and an annual output of food and manufacturing inaterials equal
to
11,720,000,000 dollars, or, say £2,348,000,0.0 The question may well be asked, Will it be possible to maintain a Round economic balance between two such gigantic forces? • Whether the producers are to give out first, or the means of pro- 1661 duction, or the capacity of fiture con- sumers. They cannot all go ahead in- definitely at high pressure. In order to make room for them, there must either be

Deep Bay and-Ping Shap, New Tery become practical and even urgent.” Meanwhile, the economist has quite enough on his hands in the existing situation with- out trying to solve the industrial problems of the next generation. The United States needs a sound currency and a banking sys- tem which does not throw the reins to speculation. Mr Lawson asserts that, whereas in England the banker is supposed to hold the check, in the United States the trader has to keep a sharp eye on the banker. Without the active help and co. operation of the banks, Wall-street could not on a recent occasion have painted the sky rod with, fantastic: prices. That was bad enough banking, and worse followed when the inevitable collapse occurred, and the banks had very little money to lend cven at 20 or 30 per cent.' Industrial

LATE TELEGRAMS.
The Late Pope. London, July 21.-Cardinal Oreglia, as Comerlengo, verified the death of Popo Leo XIII with the customary ceremonies, except that he omitted tapping the forehead of his Holiness three times with a silver hammer. Instead, the Camerlengo sprink- led the forehead with holy water from a silver bowl white calling aloud 'Ginocchion, Giacchion, Ginocchion.' Then the Cainer- longo pronounced Pope Leo XIII. to be doad. The Fisherman's ring was removed from the Pope's hand. The body of his Holiness, attired in his Pontifical vestments, was removed to the tapestry chamber of the Vatican preliminary to the public exposi
tion at St. Peter's.
The August Bank Holiday. Lord Davey (Lord of Appeal in Ordinary) has decided that the Durham minors are entitled to receive the August bank holiday --first Monday in the month.
This decision affects 120,000 employees, some of whom had been prosecuted by their employers for breach of contract in declin- ing to work upon the holiday.

British Empire Loague, At a meeting of the council of the Empire League, Mr Haldano, K.C., M.P., moved a resolution expressing the carnest hope that the Government will take fresh steps to bring the establishment of an Imperial Court of Appeal under the consideration of the Australasian and Canadian Govern- ments.
A hope is also expressed that the Post- master-eneral (Mr Auston Chamberlain) will accept letters posted in any part of the Empire and addressed to places within the Commonwealth at one penny per half-ounce The resolution was second by Mr W. P. Reeves, Agent-General for Now Zealand, and carried.

The letter from His Excellency the Go vernor asking the Chamber to elect a men- ber was read, as also were the letters no- minating Murs E. A. Hewett and H. E. Pollock for the position.
Me . R Law proposed Mr Pollock. K.O. He said that a better selection could not be made, as Mr Pollock had been a long resident in the city and had taken a very keen interest in everything promoted He also had for the public weal. Mr N. A. Siebs scconded the proposal, Mr. J. H. Lewis proposed Mr Hewett. He maintained that they as a commercial body wanted as a representativo a commer cial man, a man who, was a merchant and in continual touch with merchants. They wanted the best mun, of course, and he thought Mr Hewett was an ideal man under the circunstances. Mr Hewett was able and energetic, and had taken a hearty interest in everything of concern to the Colony. If they elected him they would have a member fearless and able to defenc their interests.
Mr E. W. Mitchell seconded, concurring with Mr. Lewis' views and saying that Mr Hewett in addition to his commercial knowledge was well versed in municipal
matters..
