of Musicians in Dublin, Ireland, some interesting particulars and some as- tonishing statistics were given' relatively to the amount of work accompli-led by the brain and nerves in piùùo-playing, says The Scientific American. „A“ piauist în view of the present state of pianoforte playing has to cultivate the eye to seo about 1,500 signs in one minute, the fingers to mako about 2,100 movements, and the brain: to receive: and understand separately the 1500 signs while it issue 2,000 orders. In playing Weber's "Moto Perpetuo," A pianist has to read 4,541 notes in a little ander four minutes. This is about 1 per second ; but an eye can receive only about ton con- secutivo impressions per second, so that it is evident that in very rapid music a player does not seo, very note singly, but in

They hauled its jaws apart, peered down its throat, rapped and punched and shook its ribs, bent its legs and waited to hear if they cracked, gazed knowingly at its quarters and slowly passed their hand down the animal's forelegs. Everybody seemed to be infected with the desire to shake up' the pony. | should show its paces. A syce with sn improvised halter made of a bamboo cane and, three inches of whipcord, dragged the unwilling beast up and down the Legation path, while the three veterinary men stood and argued with each other to the great de- light of the bystanders. One expert assumed the attitude of a wicket-keeper and watched 1604 the pony intently; another shouted in English, although it may be presumed the pony only knows Simese, while the third looked wearily on the proceedings and his rival practitioners. The fun lasted about half-an-hour and was good value indeed.

Mountain Climbing.. Allahabad, July 24. --Dr and Mrs Bulloch Workman and party opened their Himals- yan campaign during the last twelve days of Juno by Taking the first ascent and ex- ploration of the Hoh Lunrba glaciers which rum north west from Braldu valley, Bul- tistan. Nine snow camps were pitched at heights from 14,000 to 15,800 feet. Much discomfort, was caused by the changeable weather and the accumulation of new snow. The top of the Hoh Lumba glacier is encircled by a line of inaccessible, high rocks, the only depression in
the range occurring where two of these peaks are joined by a snow.col. The danger from avalanches and icefalls makes the col very diflicult of sccess, but the succcessful first ascent of it was carried out by Dr. and Mrs. Bulloch Workmati and' three Italian guides on the 3rd June. The summit is a great curling snow cornice overhanging the glacier by.six to seven 340 thousand feet. A niagnificent view towards Hispar and Burza was obtained: The height taken by hypsometric measurements, subject to correction when compared later with the daily 'readings taken at the lower stations, was 18,600 feet.

The ide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis. of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty
-Charts which has been found 'to be 4 feet
3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
