Viscount Goschen said be doubted whe-** ther Mr Chamberlain would be able to sweep the country with so many Unionist members against him. He denounced Mr Chamberlain's fiscal policy as most dan- gerous, and urged the necessity of restrict- ing the inquiry to statistical information having the Government stamp. Private compilations were not of sufficient aut hority.
At a meeting of the National Libera Federation last night Mr H.|H. Asquith, M.P., moved a resolution to the effect that Mr Chamberlain's scheme of preferential trade with the colonies would endanger the relations of the motherland with the

July 6.- A. conference convened by the Cohen Club to 'ako into consideration the proposals of Mr Chamberlain for preferential trade with the colonies was held on Saturday and was attended by delegates from co. operative sociefies and the trades-unions. The conference passed a resolution stating that it was undesirable flint social reformis should be made contingent on the so- ceptance of preferential trade in favour of the colonies, as such trade would tend to increase the burdens of the workers, to i hampor industry, to create a capitalist monopoly, and to cause international and colonial discord.
