Eventually, the jury awarding the Championship to the two girls in blue, a splendid row ensued all the men-about- town and the ladies with them in boxes and stalls booing and hissing because, with some reason, they considered that the real and the sham nigger couplee, who only took second award jointly, should have 5th; carried off the first. But the twelve good and true boulevardiers never flinched. having discharged their solemn duties according to their conscience, and Le Tout -Paris soon gave up demonstrating to go off to supper.

A LEARNED MEDICO.
From the China Times of the 18th inst. we learn that Lieut.-Colonel L Austine Waddell, C.I.E,, who is to sucked Colonel O'Connor as Principal Medical Officer of tho British forces in North China, is one of the greatest scholars England has produced for many years past. By a perhaps pardonable confusion of facts wo proclaimed him a Buddhist convert a few days ago when announcing his appointment. He is the greatest living authority on northern Buddhism. To quote Sir William Hunter in his life of the great Brian Holg son of Napal (p. 282): Among local experts who have followed on Hodgson's foot-tracks Mr Austing Waddell holds a unique position. The New Naval Base. July 4.-In Committee of the House of Commons last night a resolution forming the basis of a Naval Works Bill for two years was brought down. The bill is to provide for an expenditure of £-750,000 on items of naval works already agreed to by the House, and £1,250,000 on new

Captain E. G. Pretyman, the Civil Lord of the Admiralty, explained to the com- mittee the proposals of the Admiralty in regard to the works for which the uspendi- ture was asked.
