OFFICE PACKET SERVICE.

The Statement by Mr Austen Chamberlain,

In the House of Commons on the 8th ult., on the Vote of £536,790 for the Post Office Packet Service,

Mr Coldwell said airce the Voto was last before the Committee, the Postmaster General had appointed a Committee with a view to going into the question of a renewal of the contract or some other means of conveying the nails to China, the contract at present being held by the Peninsular and Oriental Company. The Postmaster General had the making of contracts for the conveyance of mils by land in his own

hands, but contracts for the conveyance of House. Obviously, therefore, the Com

mails by sea required the sanction of the

mittee to inquire into these contracts should have been a Committee of the House, bat the Committee which had been appointed was open to grave objection. It consisted of officials, and there was only one member of the House upon it-its Chairman, who, whatever his qualifications, had not the experience necessary in such a matter.— He did not see why, in times of peace, long-distance mails should not be conveyed by the Admiralty cruisers, which were very much faster than the mail steaners now employed. He went on to assert that competing facilities promised by the Can- adian Pacific route had never been given. He suggested that the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company had worked in harmony for their own advantage, and to the detr ment of the public interest 18 regards the quick caveyance of mails. He thought it was of the greatest importance that in such matters the Government, should negotiate as far as possible as a whole, because by that means they would be in a position to makes better bargain. and Pacific Railway, the contract was made

at the carnest request of the Dominion Go. vorniment, and not to please the Canadian and Pacific Railway Company. If there was a desire to please anybody it was the Dominion Government. It was quite true that the expectations with which the service was established had not been recently fulfilled, but

the Canadian Government had called for fresh offers for a cross-Atlantic service between this country and Canada. Up to the present the Dominion Government had made no communication to his Majesty's Govern ment, but no doubt they woull do so when they bad considered what course they would recommend. The Government, in their anxiety to meet the wishes of Canada and to facilitate the cross-Atlantic service, had gone to the utmost limits to which they could be expected to go in assenting to the renewal of the contract for five

had been postponed in order that it might be brought on at a convenient hour for discussion. If an Atlantic route of value was not established in the next interval, and if the results expected were not realised, he did not think it likely that either the Treasury or the Post Office would be inclined to concur in any further exten- sion of the contract on its prosent basis, As far as he was concerned, he should prefer, wherever it was possible, to send British mails by British ships, and they ought to be ready to pay the value of the services rendered (hear hear). As each contract came round, they would do their utmost to obtain the best terms they could, the advantage of regularity and conveni- ence of service. But the circumstances of the various contracts differed so widely that each must be dealt with on its merits, rather than that the whole should be thrown into the pot, boiled up, and consi- dered by a Cominittee of the House of Commons,

Mr Caldwell expressed himself satisfied with the discussion, and said he hoped more from the attention which the Post- master General would give to these matters than from the inquiry of the Committee.

The Voto was then agreed to.

A TRUE STORY.

England is a long way off and fifty-three years is rather far in the past; still there are a few people among us able to recall what the old country was like in 1850, the year of the in- cident to be related.

At that time there lived in a detached cottage near an English cathedral city a very eccentrio bachelor. He had formerly been wealthy; but having dissipated the greater part of his fortune, he went to the other extreme, and not only became a teetotaller but almost denied himself the necessaries of life. For years he kept him- self a prisoner in his cottage, his only companions being two ferocious ball dogs named Beer and Whisky.

Two tramps, who changed to hear that this singuler recluse was very well off, and that he was never without beer and whisky, resolved to rob him. Accordingly thoy one night broke into the lonely man's cottage, and immediately discovered that the Beer and Whisky therein were of quite different brands than they lad expected to find One of the tramps, fleeing in anad terror from the dogs, fell into a mill stream and was drowned. His companion; badly bitten, just managed to climb a all fence; but fell over it and fractured his skull, so that he died the next day.

The incident caused much excitement at the time, and it had scarcely subsided when the local shop keeper reported that the only answer he could obtain to his knocking was the growls of Beer and Whisky; whereupon the police broke into the coltage and discovered the old mao-dead. The inquest was remarkable for a dispute which, it occasioned between two doctors. One maintained that death was the result of fright at the recent attempted robbery: the other, that deceased died from chronic igestion brought about by improper diet and tuf exercise, ho not having been outside Justtage for eighteen years. The discussion as taken up by the giants of the mediçıl profession, and ably debated, the conclusion reached being that indigestion is a disease arising from infinitely numerous causes, and itself productive of complaints hardly less nume- rous. "But it was not then known (as it has been now for thirty-five years) that indigestion has one sure onre,' wis, Beigel's Syrup.

Mr H. C. Blackie, of Post Office Chambers, Auckland, N.Z., has not kept within his house for eighteen years. On the contrary, he is a traveller and knows the world woll. Writing on 16th March, 1903, Mr Blackde observes: For years I was a martyr to indigestion and flatulence, Wind used to press on the valve of my heart to such an alarming degree that on two cocasions I fainted on the platform when publicy speaking. Dietary and medicinal treatment failed utterly until, on the re- commolation of a Pfessor at the Working Man's College, Melbourne, I tried Mohor Salgel's Syrup. By taking it regularly after asch meal I very soon found relief, and have ever since been ablo to enjoy all foods without inconvenienos. My cure was effected about four years ago, when I had consumed from six to aight bottles, bat one bottle was sufficient to afford ma relief. I have never ceased to praise the gues of Beigel's Syrop in the Colonies I visit au commercial traveller, merely in gratitude for the great beneft derived from it for I bave no business connection whatever with its proprietors. What I now say is quite unsolicited. Certainly there is no other mach potent and casy remedy for all forms of in- igestion. Such is the testimony of an intelligant and experienced man. Of indigestion it may be said, an was sai of fame, some inherit it, some achieve it, and some have it thrust upon them (as in the case of persons compelled to leal sedentary life); but all may -andeste it by following the example of Mr Blankie

Hongkong Tides. The tide table given below has been compiled at he Nautical

Imanac Offica

in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9,

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet

3 inches below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoris Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to

the height given in the table..
