With the mother-in-law Mr Crosland, with rare sacrifice, refuses to deal; She may be fair or foul, he says, but he will not discuss her. He turns to mamma-in- law instead, and vamps about her to the tune that she becomes beautiful when she

Pulling himself up in the midst of his

tion Man's laudation of woman is simply
the Shakespeare in the heart of every Eng lishman coming uut. It is all due to Shakespeare.
WHERE SHAKESPEARE GENED, Whon he begins to play the fool about women, when he begins to see stars where there are only eyes, pearls where thers are orly teeth, coral where there are only lip,
And little mice there where are fairly healthy feet, it is simply Willie Shake Spare asserting himself.

Women as writers do not earn approval in this book. The woman writer is an offence in the sight of Olympus,' wo read. Leaving out Sappho, who may have been aman, and Homer, who may have been a woman, there are luckily no women writers among the classics.'
ly in three cases are women writers since those days held to have accomplished work capable of ranking with man's-Mrs Browning, Ouida, and Mrs Meynell.
Clothes afford a fine opportunity of fur- ther attempts to make
woman angry. Woman is described as having been want- ing to know what to wear ever sinco Eden, but though there are clothes unlimited for her to choose from she does not know how to pick out of the mass the clothes that she and no other woman should wear.
·It re-
quires a un to tell a woman how to dress. and so the world is populous with man- milliners.'
The ridicule, however is overdone. Her, for instance, is a picture of the spor- ting woman. The shooting woman usu- ally spoils the shoot; yachting and women have nothing to do with one another; no woman can play golf ; no woman should be trusted with the wheel of a motor-ear that can make more than eight miles an hour; women who play billiards are the cloth- maker's friends.'
The last chapter is one of advice--it tells how to reform lovely woman. It ends with thest words :-

Floods and Landslips. The heavy rain-storm experienced on Saturday and Sunday morning caused extensive damage to property and road- ways in the Colony. Rain began to fall on Thursday, and continued with growing violence till late yesterday evening. On Saturday it was particularly bad, and people were driven indoora, the streets being deserted, with the exception of a few ricksha-pullers and guardians of the Receiving Order and First General Meeting the purpose of considering the following peace, who sought shelter under balconies. Confident of Success.
NEW YORK, June 25. Sir Thomas Lipton, owner of the chall- enger for the American Cup, arrived here yesterday. He was met at the dock by a large crowd of friends and members of the New York Yacht Club and was escorted to his hotel. He is in the best of health and
spirits and says that he has every contid- ence that when he departs for England's shores again, he will carry the long-coveted trophy with him.
His confidence is shared by a few ex- |perts, but the great majority of the latter claim that the Shamrock 111 has no show whatever against the Constitution, and it looks as if the betting public was willing to stand by their judgment as the odds are now in favor of the Constitution and will remain so until after the first heat is run.
The betting was 4 to 1 in favor of the Constitution just before the Taronet's arrival, but it dropped shortly after owing to quite a large number of his friends having imbibed some of his confidence in the cap- abilities of the new boat.
The following jury was empanelled : – Messrs F. H. Shuster, A. McColl, W. C. D. Turner, W. H. Purcell, A. Beattie, C. König, G. Brusse.

Between tho Clock Tower, the Pust Office, and the Hongkong Hotel, n body of water sometimes one or two feet in depth ran along the street and down the narrow passages like a mill race, carrying away all nanner of light property ranging from unclaimed coolie hats to domestic utensils. The stair-way leading from Upper Albert Road to Wyndham Street, resembled a regular waterfall, and intermingled with the flood were bricks and broken bottles, and other articles. Those living on the upper levels suffered much damage, both by water and washaways. At Conduit Road many landslips occurred, whilst at Bonham Road, near Richmond Terrace, a newly erected wall collapsed and blocked the road to traffic. Not very far from that pot, at Hospital Road, the road-way was Richmond Road, the paths were treated completely cut in two, and at Upper

About 6.45 yesterday morning a rock weigh- ing many tons rolled from its bed and dashed down the hillside near the Bolcher Forts finally anchoring itself between the walls of a small dwelling at the foot of the forts. Sir Henry Berkeley explained that the land in question formerly belonged to a family named Lau, the head of which died in Singapore in 1889. He was survived by his mother, widow, and three sons, and to them he left the land. In 1902 they sold the land to one Lo Sang; it was officially transferred and the deed was duly signed by the survivors and the purchaser took possession of it and subsequently sold it to another_man. Jand in question was within the boundary Subsequently a land court was established to settle the titles of the land in the New Territory and it was before that court that the perjury was com mitted. Some time after the sale of the land a cousin of the Lau's said she found an old cleed referring to it and took it to the prisoner. She had an idea that she could squeeze some money from Ng Lo Sam who was then in possession of the land, for the deed. Later on the prisoner took the widow of the deceased Lau to the office of Messrs Deacon and Hastings, and they signed some document. They after wards went to the Land Court and the prisoner induced her and others to sign u form claiming the land, and to give evid- ence that they had not disposed of it. The claim and the deed were filed. One of the sons who gave false evidence was sen. tenced to three months' imprisonment
with hard labour.
Evidence was then led.

The New Manchurian
Agreement.
The following is the text of the new agreement between Russia and Japan with regard to Manchuria and Korea, reported to have been arrived at by General Kur- opatkin, Russian Minister for War, and the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs. The agreement was published in the Tushin Nippo and translated by the Kobe Chronicle :-
The Governments of Japan and Russia respectively, being desirous of avoiding a conflict of their respective interests, both political and commercial, in Manchuria and Korea, and also to avoid the infringement of their respective rights and interests, and with the object of promoting friendly and cordial relations in the future, have drawn up the following stipulations:-

Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below nican sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 8 inches to the height given in the table,"
